It could be the 3GB of ESD downloaded via Windows Store, Just like Windows 8.1 (which was about ~2.8GB for x64).
The main point is 3 GB is a large size for what is meant to be an update. I would expect it to be larger than update 1 because I assume it would be cumulative (include update 1 as well), but you also have to consider many of the files updated are files already existing in update 1, so it wouldn't really add anything to the size of the update. It's possible that the person didn't know what they were talking about when they said 3 GB, and that size is representative of a refresh of the distribution media as what happened with Update 1. As there was no reference to architecture, and the size, the 3 GB if referring to the distribution media is probably x86.
Most definitely , as a direct update or, assuming there are new distribution media available, by using existing licenses with refreshed media.
Just like the refreshed media with update 1. When installed, essentially the same as having pre-update 1 media installed with update 1 then installed. The updates could be considered as minor service packs.
It's just a guess, but I think the support rep meant a Windows 8 -> 8.1.2 update would be 3GB through the store. I guess Update 1 -> Update 2 is just a Windows Update update.
The 3 GB does refer to refreshed media, it's 'confirmed'. Update 2, assuming it is cumulative (containing update 1) will still be quite sizable.
It's interesting Microsoft released a whole heap of updates for Windows 8 yesterday (Windows 8, not 8.1). It does seem a little pointless? supporting it still, some things don't. For example, starting from driver version 14.6 (RC2 20 June was released on 23 June) AMD will no longer support Windows 8 in their drivers.
I'm terrible with this appx stuff... Do you suppose this msi installer is loading the packages and licenses in an automated way that we could take advantage of to keep things current? I mean... I guess it finishes the pending stuff and updates the packages by that time anyway... It just seems a little wasteful to do it this way.
There is no license included, only main .appxbundle and dependency VCLibs.appx those are updates, not standalone, meaning it only updates the apps if present in the system i cannot really say how it works, my system already have newer app version than those updates (Reader is the same) i launched the installer anyway, and it only extracted the files to %temp% Edit: actually, it did add registry settings and copied the msi file to Installer folder
