Go to device manager, view - show hidden devices - see if there is any weird chit listed under Storage Volumes. Each one should be labeled as the other, if there is any deviation, remove it. Then try again.
Is there any other 8.1 computer you can try? A friend's or (I know this is weird) take it to a Best Buy, Costco, etc. and test it there?
