    There has been a start button on every single version of windows for likely 99% of people here, the exception being earlier than 95

    MS remove it, and you wonder why people kick up a fuss ? Of course they will.

    How would you feel if every mouse had the left click button removed and made you use the right click for everything left click used to do ? You'd go mental, same as removing start button.

    Personally I use an orb with no button icon on Win 7, but us tech-heads are the 5% exception to windows owners, the other 95% need visual clues to guide them around the OS

    If the doorbell button was removed from your house, and an invisible button was in its place, how many people would know how to press it without being told ? None apart from the idiot who made it invisible in the first place.

    Its common sense, remove the icon, why would you even think there was something there to click ?

    If there are no icons on my desktop, I'm not going to try clicking around the place looking for one am I ?

    question: how long takes a simple mouse click to desktop? a minute? half a minute? or just a second after boot?
    Even noobs can click to desktop within this short period of time, don't you?
    There is quite some information on Start screen which could be interesting like your Twitter, Mail, News, Weather or whatever BS,... but being forwarded to desktop as default, you might be loosing some time to find all your information.

    Consider pros who only dealt/dealing with such timing stuff all day long to find out which way is best.

    I am not saying the new start screen is bad, its probably a godsend for some (tablet owners), just not me.
    Twitter, Mail, News, Weather etc is stuff my kids do on their mobile phones, my PC is used for DAW apps and a little gaming, i have no need or use for the new start screen and never will.
    The quickest way around "My PC" is from my desktop, period.

    ... I was simply saying that everyone who does not need the SCREEN is about a second/click away from it and right on desktop. The way back is a click on win-key and back. Is it only me or ....

    If you live with others in the same room (like college students or anything) you can feel the pain of this. While the start menu items are small enough to be only readable by who sits in front of the computer, even people in the next town can read your start screen, see your emails, pictures, twitter, whatever you wrote etc. It may be a privacy concern for some people. While it's OK on a mobile phone screen, it can be very intrusive is you have a big full HD screen. Yes, you can turn off live tiles, but then what's the point of the whole stuff?

    haha, customizing the live tiles for you privacy is required. Porn stuff on your picture tiles might be interesting for someone around your table .. lol:roflmao:

    why need start button ? :eek::eek::eek::cool: but after all win 8.1 will be better more stable and Windows 9 will be even more interesting, we need new user interface, windows xp for me personally it was a pure thing of the past. vista brings new innovations and problems, windows 7 was a hit as were to be vista, but now windows 8.1 has a chance to prove that the new function to be more like it, and what will happen with windows 9 can only hope that Microsoft learn to quickly from mistakes, and the next version will be better and more attractive because Metro user interface has great potential (in my opinion), time will tell everything. start button is useless to me at all. :cool:

    I knew you'd reply this. Yes, that's one example, many people have that stuff on their computer, there's no point in denying this. However, if this case was the only privacy concern, it wasn't worth creating a forum post. You don't have to go as far as porn. Family photos, emails, chat etc. are all information we usually don't want to share with everyone. Also how would you feel if the neighbor saw on your start screen that you play hello kitty online and put it on a social networking site to make fun of you? It's just a joke, but I'm sure you get the point.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "Shell"="explorer.exe, explorer.exe"

    Takes you straight to the desktop with explorer open at startup.

    What's the difference? :confused: :eek::rofl6:

    A. boot into start screen, click on desktop tile and go to desktop.

    B. boot directly into desktop, click to close explorer.

    ??????????

    One click to go 1 step forward to Desktop!

    One click to go 1 step back to Desktop!

    Better would be to be directly on desktop, isn't it?!

    I'm still not able to test that out, it's quite some pain for me to use my right hand with the broken finger.

    The Start button was not always visible in previous versions. When you are watching a full screen video, there is not Start Button in Windows 7! But in Windows 8 there are still two.
    ;)

    I think everybody and his mother now knows how to go to the Start Menu in Windows 8. There were even a lot of articles about this in mainstream news. And Blue is still some months away. When the update is ready, everybody will know how to use Windows 8. No need for a useless button on the Taskbar IMO.
