Correct. My computers use the traditional Legacy BIOS mode. See this ttutorial: www edugeek.net/forums/windows-8/print-99093-windows-go-info-creating-windows-go-removable-usb-drive.html Key Messages: Delete 350 MB partition from USB stick Activate the other partition Assign drive letter to the other partition; e.g. "E:" Install boot files to the other partition: bcdboot E:\windows /s E: /f all Boot the USB stick and complete installation Install USB filter driver files (Hitachi Microdrive driver, CFAdisk.inf and cfadisk.sys) on USB stick and reboot Enable "bitlocker" on USB stick. "Bitlocker" needs the 350 MB partition. So the 350 MB partition is recreated, activated and the boot files are copied to it.
Thanks NiFu for all this information. I have been able to activate a Win To Go Kingston WorkSpace USB stick through phone using a WMC key (one of these famous Windows Media Center key). This stick was first build and booted on a Dell Inspiron, but when I boot this WTG on an other computer (a Compaq Presario) it says not activated. On the Compaq the 9 series of numbers generated for the phone activation are not the same anymore than on the Dell. Maybe I can activate the WTG by trying a 2nd phone activation but I am not going to do this because I would have to do the same thing every time after booting on a new computer. When I put back this Kingston USB stick back in the original Dell computer it says again activated So my conclusion is that the only way to have a « real mobile Windows » that you can use on many computers is to have a Windows 8 Enterprise volume license with the special type of activation that goes with it.
This should be clear. It's like you move your hard disk from one computer to another. No problem for me. I have a legal Enterprise volume key.
One WTG only work with one computer(activation-wise), but you can setup your USB to have more than one Windows(I have 3)...
I use to setup Windows 8.1 Pro Preview as Win2Go drive on external USB 3.0 HDD without problem. Activation was done using MTK 2.43 and set for Auto. Only if you change t a new Machine, it need a bit of time to setup Windows for that Machine and after starting the activation works with nor problems!
Most companies do their KMS activations with their own KMS server. Then they need for activation a connection to the company network. But if they don't have an own KMS server (e.g. in small companies) it's also possible to activate via Microsoft public KMS server.
That's just true! Microsoft provides the Software and Product Keys needed and let handle to run the KM-Servers by their customers. That differs from MA-Keys! In this case MS is handle the activations the MS System which really didn't do anything else than counting and comparing the activations and keys!
Thanks pisthai ! I wonder why I did not find this link on technet .. BTW the only limitation of using an Win To Go USB key on a computer where it is not activated seems to be that Windows stops without warning after 1 hour ?
If you used the correct way to install Windows To Go from an Windows 8 Enterprise, using also the right Product Key for first activation, it would stay activated regardless to which computer you connect that Win2Go drive for to booting up. It will not stop after one hour. Win2Go didn't activate on an computer, it activates on the external Media on which it is installed, to say that with banal words!
If I have a license for Windows 8 and I download the iso for Windows 8.1, when Microsoft releases the final official build for it will my license work for it?
Afaik upgrading from legit Retail Win 8 to Win 8.1 will be free. Didn´t hear anything about the fact, whether this applies to fresh installs likewise .
