If you retail/oem activate windows 8, when you log into the store it will have the 8.1 update available. It doesn't work for kms or mak activation.
Thanks !! I have KMS activation ,so obviously I must find another way to update to Win 8.1 ! Perhaps make my Transcend JF810 USB 32 GB GB somehow "fixed disk" ?
??? Rufus like the other tools -Yumi,WinToBootic .... only make the Win Installation 7/8 on the USB flash drive !, I need to Boot Win 8.1 OS from It !!!
Did you try using the custom USB driver mod? I don't know if it works with usb3. I also should note that changing drivers for your usb is kind-of a bad idea. Please be careful with this stuff. It might mess up your system if you don't know what you're doing.
Thanks for this however... Can someone please tell me if this solves not being able to boot fully on USB 3.0? I have set up windows to go on my WD 320 GB HDD USB 3.0 it can boot fine when plugged into the USB 2.0 port but when its plugged into the USB 3.0 port it starts to load Windows then gives the BSOD with the error of "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" I have an ASUS N53SV laptop... basically maxed out with upgrades I have also tried booting on my wife's ASUS ZenBook UX31A which is newer with a recent BIOS and it also fails to boot from USB 3.0 i have to turn of the USB 3.0 controller in her BIOS to get windows to go to boot (ZenBook only has 2 USB 3.0 Ports) I've followed every method to get windows to go on a drive except this one. Hopefully someone can give me one insight. Thanks!
Me using a WD Passport USB3.0 Hdd & plugging it into a USB3.0 port on the ASUS P8P67 Pro Rev3 MB - I get the message “Missing Operating System”. Using the same external Hdd & plugging it into the ASUS P5QC MB USB2.0 port it boots fine. It also works fine on my Windows 8.1, Lenovo Laptop + USB3.0 port. *I never got a answer @ the ASUS forums so I suspect it may be a BIOS thing, not sure though.
Win8 and win8.1 have still an unsolved problem of recognition of usb3.0 devices, on some motherboards and with the native driver. I discussed it with support from M $, but no solution. I resolved, with the suggestion of a member of this forum, disabling quick start.
It seems to be the same for some Win8.1SE users. It works for me with my hardware, Which motherboard do you use? Maybe a track for USB3 HDD that does not work well or not mounted, following this blog Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers: ht tp:// plugable.com/2012/12/01/windows-8-and-intel-usb-3-0-host-controllers/comment-page-4 If anyone wants to try, I prepared the latest drivers (the orginal inf file are renamed in .inf.org) Intel(R)_USB_3.0_v1.0.10.255_Mod_eXtensible_Host_Controller_Driver.zip ht tp://ww w.fileswap.com/dl/u1suRr4wJ/ intel_usb3_30141_mod_for_Haswell.zip ht tp://ww w.fileswap.com/dl/Tyebc07WS4/ link without space, not enough post to be allowed
UPDATE: Ok so i seem to have figured out how to boot it up on the ASUS Zenbook UX31A, the only way is to goto the advanced boot options in the Windows Options select Restart. Then when you get to the blue tiles i had to select UEFI options on boot (BIOS menu) then once the computer booted into the bios menu i selected the UEFI external hard disk for my windows to go, then it actually booted into windows in USB 3.0 mode (for some reason if i were to enter BIOS from shut down it still wouldn't boot, i had to tell windows to go into bios for it to work).... I also now have my Windows to go on an SSD so the speeds are INSANE fast, and because its an SSD the 4K in even a USB 2.0 port is also pretty fast. So whether it be USB 3.0 or 2.0 when you have windows to go on an SSD its pretty damn fast.
Hello ChrisR I'm glad to see you around I tried the way of the blog plugable time ago, but without success I have a Asrock B75m-GL with a Core i5-3570k (Ivy Bridge) for some reason the quick start does not load the driver USB3.0 I solved the problem by disabling the Quick Start (which remains however fast the same)
Hi neofita, Good to know that disabling the fast startup works for you in 8.1 To-Go with your USB3 HDD. In 8.1 PE which is not very far on this, some guys still have this issue while Hibernate and Fast Startup are disabled. It seems often linked with Intels chipsets and Core i3 i5 i7 that's why I also added the track with the drivers. Disable USB selective suspend also seems to help in some cases. I used the AOMEI Windows to Go feature to install Windows 8.1 Pro onto a SanDisk 64GB Cruzer Extreme USB 3.0 Flash Drive (this is one of the ones that is recognized as a local disk rather than removable media). I used an official installation disk (mailed directly from Microsoft Tech Support to resolve an issue that I fixed without needing it) and used the included activation code. It seemed to work perfectly when I tested it on the system I used for the installation however, I get the watermark and the "windows is not activated" message on the system page when I boot from it on my laptop. I've used it this way many times and whenever I've tried it on the original system it shows activated but not on any other. Is there a solution for this? Please and Thank You
Just FYI guys, i wanted to try out the Windows Tech Preview but didn't want to install it on my system so i made a Windows to go with it! It worked perfectly on an external hard drive i have (didn't want to bother with flash drive... too many issues) So now i have a fully fuctional Windows 10 Preview that can be run on any PC!! So awesome, i cant get it to work from USB 3.0 though unfortunatly, but its still decent speed from a HDD.
