I want to buy one but I dunno how to find out which are and are not supported directly by Windows.

    (I don't have any spare PCI-E slots).

I have looked in the certified sysdev site but I think stuff that is included as part of the install is not put there ?

I only need another 2 ports really.

By these days, i bet any card you buy will be directly supported by windows 8.1

There is far too many that are only supported by 32 bit (Or at least that is stated.)

I just want to know a chip number that is supported for certain or how to look in the iso to find out.

    Thanks

USB 2.0 has been supported since XP SP2. Any USB 2.0 card you put in there should work with the built-in drivers.
