No, just restarted with the DVD in the drive, booted to DVD, installed using the key and windows was activated when I first logged on.
You only need to change MediaBootInstall=1 to MediaBootInstall=0 when starting a fresh install from the ISO file you downloaded from the Microsoft Upgrade Assistant. After the clean install is finished you change MediaBootInstall=1 to MediaBootInstall=0 and then Activate.. This is how i managed to have my fresh win 8 install
So we can skip the registry change and just boot from RTM (MSDN) ISO image, format the HDD and then activate automatically after installation finishes? Will it work on a clean or new HDD without any version of Windows previously installed? Like the OEM license is supposed to work? If so, this is a great way to have a legit license on the cheap.
So, upgrade assistant detects if you have x86 or x64 OS and downloads correct version of Windows 8? You cant download x86 if you run x64?
this works on me: 1. open regedit 2. search this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE 3. Change "MediaBootInstall" from "1" to "0" 4. open cmd with admin privilegies 5. tipe this: slmgr /rearm and hit enter 5. restart pc/laptop etc. 6. again open cmd with admin privilegies 7. then install your key with these commands: 7a. slmgr /ipk XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX and hit enter 7b. slmgr /ato and hit enter PS: I missed the first three steps and started from the fourth step. This work from bids of $ 14.99 and $ 39.99 PS2: I used Windows 8-Upgrade Assistant, only to get the keys. I use WINDOWS.8.PROFESSIONAL.RTM.X64.ENGLISH.DVD-WZT
Just completed and activated an inplace upgrade of 7 ultimate to 8 pro using RTM media and a 14.99 key. No registry tweak.
Is there any way to know if the Upgrade Assistant downloads 32bit or 64bit version of Windows 8, or is it based on your existing version of Windows? What if I want to download ISO-images for both 32bit and 64bit Windows 8's? I do have 32 and 64 bit ISO-images that SHA-1 matches with MSDN webpage, but those ISO's are much bigger and presumably older as well. Is the Windows installation going to be the same if I use those versus the one that the Upgrade Assistant downloads? Also, about the activation, alot of stuff seems to be going around about this right now. I want to secure erase my SSD before installing to restore it's max performance, and I really dont want to install Windows 7 prior Windows 8. I understood that no matter if I install using MSDN or Upgrade Assistant versions, I still can't activate without the registry tweak?
Simble: For your last question I have to say, that I downloaded the 15 EUR upgrade offer, burnt the ISO, restarted, input the code and after the installation finished, my Windows 8 Pro was activated. No registry hack needed here...
this method only works with MSDN TECHNET retail images/iso i just tested english and other languages(different iso's), for me both my keys(14.99 offer) got installed from CLEAN installation no upgrades no windows already on it, other releases that i have tested has failed to activate and or has stated it was an upgrade key only!. So there you have it, no hack n tricks with registry or homework before doing it. Its nice simple and clean. Another note: People can actually buy/upgrade/use the 14.99 offer with Upgrade Assistant on windows 8, you dont have to be on windows xp/vista/7! just run the program in compatibility mode windows 7
does anyone think they will kill these keys anytime?? there is a 5 key limit per person so we got 5 under my name and 5 under my wifes name both different address' also just in case. i hate to loose these keys i also bought one 39.99 one before i saw this deal and it sucks i wish i didnt buy that one i could have bought almost 3 for that price lol.
No of cause they wont kill those keys you have made an agreement to m$ while you bought them, and my bet there's already many millions 14.99 offer activated so why would they?, they can look at it as this, better the pirates pay a smaller price than not paying us at all!. I fx, would never had done this if the price was 50-70$ +, better keep it low and still catch all than just overprice it loose billions because of overpriced software.
