Some people value a clean system over worrying about False positives.
The report isn't focused on free AV. There are no popups in the paid version. Works great for me in W8 & W7 so haven't had to worry about support.
The report specifies exactly which version of the AV programs they test, but I guess it's easier just hand waving away stuff that doesn't agree with your opinion than actually considering the facts.o_O

Avast Free v7 works fine with Windows 8, but when I first installed it, it needed the Windows 8 compatibility update since the Metro Apps would crash on startup, I think the issue might be resolved now in the installers.

I realize this is an old thread, but non the less, I feel I must contribute, I'm going to mention the products name, and that's it.

Forticlient. It even addresses Security Vulnerabilities and how to correct them with either knowledgebase article link or a link to a hotfix that isn't part of the normal winodows7 update schedule. Eitherway I kinda like it and feel compelled to mention it in Anti-Virus threads. Thanks 4 listening.:p

Install an antivirus for better protection of your windows 8 system. You can install any like Norton, Immunet Plus, Kaspersky, Avast, Avira etc. Although Windows 8 has inbuilt antivirus but it’s important to have an extra and more superior antivirus to enhance protection.

It's maybe advisable if you're a frequent user of Porn sites, on line Gaming, Warez and other suspicious sites!

Even if W8 has Microsoft Security Essentials, it's better to install an Antivirus :)

How does that even make sense? W8 ships with Defender, which is Security Essentials, which is a Antivirus solution o_O

I agree, there's been some debate about the effectiveness of MSSE (microsoft security essentials / defender) but I don't see the need to clutter up the OS with a 3rd party antivirus... I've been using MSSE since the first day it came out in 2006 and I've never got a virus or malware..

MSSE actually got ranked low earlier this year by AV-test when presented with a large number of exotic viruses and malware... antivirus test organizations take every virus they've ever heard of and throw it at the system.... then rank all the companies by how many they missed... and of course if you throw a disease from the 1800s that nobody ever sees, doctors will have trouble catching it.

in the real world Microsoft stats for number of users affected by a virus or malware while using MSSE or Defender are very impressive:
    - only .0033% of defender / security essentials and Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection (the daddy product of defender / MSSE) users got affected by a malware that they missed in in antivirus tests by AV-test
    - when Microsoft looked at the AV-test results, 94% of what AV-test threw at MSSE was never seen by a single customer...

it makes sense that the antivirus industry wants to knock free products so it pays for us to figure it out... and I'd make a friendly bet that Norton, Avast and Eset probably have more than .0033% of their users affected by malware... thats a crazy low %

heres their answer to the AV-test report .... I cant post link yet here so search : blogs.technet.com/b/mmpc/archive/2013/01/16/lessons-learned-from-the-latest-test-results.aspx

I'm not going to bother with another anti v or malware...

Just as a grain of salt...............if anyone is interested....................

I have been using for quite a while Symantec Endpoint Security. Careful THIS IS NOT NORTON. People still today do not understand this................. Symantec should have utilized a different approach with Norton. Chalk and cheese.
I run this product (Endpoint Security) in WIN 7, WIN 8 and WIN 2008 R2 Enterprise. Very low footprint. Symantec purchased a while ago, Sygate firewall and this is built in now. It has also intrusion prevention and it works !
FOr WIN 8 you need editioin 12.1.2 onwards and runs in 2012 server as well. So far so good with it.

Indeed, avast is very light and has excellent detection rates and is FREE

I also use SUPERAntiSpyware to remove those harmful/tracking cookies! great combo

I personally use NOD32 v7 on my system but I use avast Free on all my other computers in the house for the other family members
