There's a good reason for small increments to the Kernel version number now rather than moving to the next whole number. Overall hardware and software compatibility can more or less remain the same with small 0.1 increments to the Kernel version, which results in less work for vendors and partners. For example, most hardware drivers and software applications written for Windows 7 and even Vista will probably work just fine with Windows 8. This wasn't always as straight forward where XP and Vista were concerned, especially with hardware drivers. Sinofsky also has the entire Windows development process changed now from what it was like previous to Windows 7, this also has something to do with it.
The versionnumber doesn't say much about app compatibility. If they switch to 7.0 instead of staying at 6.2, and that causes an app not to work anymore, then it has nothing to do with compatibility. It's just because the app checks for the versionnumber. If they switch to 7.0 then devs have plenty of time before the RTM release to change the check form "is windows 6.1" to "is windows 7.0". In therms of code and compatibility it's still the same version of windows. Oh, and this is a good thread. Actually 3 pages of usefull info
Correct. That is why I say that microsoft will not have no problem in changing the version to 7.0 As I said before: "Windows 8 is a major release and it version number will be 7.0"
"Personally, I think..." It was just my opinion, neither a speculation. Also, you could have been kind to explain me why I'm wrong. Well, said this, better to stop the argument here.
Oooh, an explanation. If they do that in M3 stage, it would be good. Devs will have time to prepare theirs apps and be ready for final.
Canouna, have you had any issues, running MSE or flash? Any difference in the media codecs? Do .mkv's play without installing a 3rd party splitter, show thumbnails?
I believe Windows 8 will be staying at version 6.2 If they were to make the move to 7.0 then they would have changed this much earlier in development. Since the first M2 build (7853) they have moved to Kernel version 6.2 and haven't changed again since, this is probably a good indication that Windows 8 will stay at NT version 6.2 for its reaming time in development and through to RTM. Remember, Sinofsky and the Windows division no longer refer to Windows as "Major or "Minor" versions but instead, releases.
Look this image: h**p://w*w.zath.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/microsoft-windows-server-release-cadence.jpg
To be honest, that image doesn't prove so much. Windows Server 2003 is considered a major release, although it has 5.2 as version number, so it is still in NT 5.x range as its predecessor, Windows 2000 Server.
That has nothing to do with my question. I know .mkv is just a container. Win 7 can't generate thumbnails natively for any .mkv regardless of codec.
You can post the link here with h**p instead of http. EDIT: Do you still need to download much? Maybe you can check for legitness first before everyone starts downloading it, just in case it's fake.
Here's a question I want to ask everyone. Why is there no screenshot showing Windows 8 on Connect? Now THAT is the question
