...and what kind of key is that? Windows 8.x keys can't be shared.

Sure you can upgrade with many keys, for example with the default ProWMC key ending in JK7QT. This says nothing about activation and therefore not useful.

If it isn't useful then how did I activate two different copies of Windows 8.1 on two different computers by using the method:

    1) Upgrade unactivated Win 8.1 Pro to Win 8.1 ProWMC
    2) Enter valid media center upgrade key
    3) Activate online.

    ?

This method worked with Windows 8 before they closed the loophole. Now it doesn't let you enter the WMC key without previous activation.

I already tested this on my VHD. It might be useful if you had a previous backup of an already activated Windows 8.1 WMC after a fresh installation on same machine.

Also the WMC key should have been activated before it expired. So others free unused WMC keys should not work.

A valid media center upgrade key obviously isn't a kms client key... I'm talking about a legit retail one.

It did work for me for some reason. I don't know why, it just did. And yes, this is a fresh Windows installation.

No. There's no 8.1 KMS activation for "offline"
This is a web server. There will be more known about soon.

I was talking about the upgrade being possible while you're disconnected from the internet... Not activating Windows.

Ok guys, that public KMS server is still online but that won't last long now that its address is published all over the place. So let me share something with you.

Know about 58.173.212.51 ? Well that will now activate Windows 8.1 too ! All it has ever done is proxy any traffic it gets on port 1688 to a "real" KMS server, which can be at any IP. I just switched it over to that now-famous KMS server instead of my VPS as it was the case previously, however the point is that with this setup, the "real" KMS server's IP is never know by the public. You can crack down on 58.173.212.51 all you want but let me tell you, there is nothing there but a $50 home router doing port redirection. Yes, the same kind you are using right now to access the internet.

And you can do the same too ! Just add a port forwarding rule to forward any TCP 1688 request it gets to the IP of a real KMS server and bam, your public IP now acts as a public KMS server ! The only tricky part about that is that many home router firmwares are locked down to only accept forwarding to IP addresses inside your LAN (eg 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx are the most common) however some will accept any IP - that's what you want.
Otherwise a very basic TCP proxy will do the trick, or an iptables DNAT rule on a linux box.

So, next time you know of a public KMS server, instead of posting its address all over the place, it would certainly be a lot better to keep it to yourself or a limited group of trustworthy people and set up proxies all over the web. That will send MS on a wild goose chase while keeping the KMS server's identity hidden. (I guess if it's a legitimate server MS can still find whose it is by checking its PID and matching it against the KMS host keys they issued ?)

Disclaimer : of course it's better not to do that with your own internet connection, altough I can hardly imagine ISPs doing anything more than sending you a warning email like the ones you get for downloading torrents. Be creative !

I think it is a good idea docdocdoc9.

But itn't it possible to see where the connection ends? So that you will be able to find the server to which it redirects? Let's all use our brains and think about it.

    Also I have an idea:
Hide the IP with activating through the TOR network. Setup a TOR only KMS server.

What we need is an activation backup of a working v6 KMS server so one of you more knowledgeable chaps can put together a nice VM install for us all. :smokecowboy:

Hehe, that is even better. Only local activation, no internet at all.

Wow, docdocdoc9, you managed to find it, thank you very much! You saved my day! I do not have to wait until my school gets Windows 8.1 anymore! I now have an activated copy of Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

It is also an Office 2013 KMS server.
