Yeah, just tried both those things as well. Guess I'll just have to remember to start it up after a cold boot.
MSE 2.1 will not allow me to update the virus definitions, says authentication not supported . using 7989 . YF
Well that was fun trying to get MSE 2.1 to install. 1. I tried updating the old version through it's interface.. couldn't connect to MS for the update. 2. Downloaded installer and ran it in win 7 compatibility mode.. it uninstalled the old version but stalled at the install process 3. Ran in regular mode without compatibility, looked like it was gonna work but crapped out again at the same spot. 4. Restarted and tried Win 7 mode again.. then this popped up Ignored it and failed again. 5. I tried installing it through the ninite.com installer which appeared to work fine but wouldn't update the definitions again. Rebooted and Action Center gave me this popup but clicking Yes did nothing. 6. Uninstalled again and tried running the ninite.com installer in Win 7 comp. mode, rebooted and this time this came up Clicking the button or manually starting the service in services.msc appeared to do nothing at all. 7. I browsed the install directory and manually unchecked all the .exe's win 7 compatibility modes and rebooted again. Finally the MSE icon came up in the tray and turned green by itself. Plus now the shutdown procedure during restart passed much faster, so I guess either MSE or the MS antimalware service was hanging at shutdown. So.. in short, I had to install in Win 7 compatibility mode through ninite.com, but then needed to set all the executables to run in native "Win 8 mode"
It seems that AntiVir is working now, only updates fail (Function WinINet::InternetOpen() failed: Content decoding has failed), manual update should work...

Only on-demand scanner like mbam or hitman. Real time AVs create a big fuss over files, combined with that silly smartscreen.
