It will not work, as you will get the "ERROR: Could not install files for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista! Installation aborted." message.

I even tried to install it as Windows Vista, and as Windows 7, with no luck.

I have the networking working now, but the mouse lag is still there.

Good to know that I am not the only one.

Does everyone using VirtualBox with Windows 8 have this problem?

Before you turn on your virtual computer in VirtualBox, press Settings (in the middle, before Start button in VirtualBox). There you can change the settings.

If you want a smoother interface, activate remote control on the Windows 8 installation, and connect from Remote Desktop connection. Then you don't have any problems with slow mouse.

Tips that have helped other users successfully install on a VM.

    - Before install, change BIOS date to 2012, this can bypass the timebomb and activate the new logon. Change back to current date after install.

    - Turn on IO APIC / PAE

    Please share your results.

Can't get it to run in VirtualBox here. Simply activating PAE/NX didn't work for me, and I can't enable hardware virtualization as my processor doesn't support it. Now trying to install it with Virtual PC.. Afaik 7850 had problems with it, but maybe 7955 works.

EDIT: yup.. BSoD's after installation :(

Virtual PC had same issues as VMWare Player for me. Virtual Box was the only one to work with the laggy mouse

My Bios Hardware Virtualistion was enable but is still gives an error.
    After it says "Starting Windows",
    it flashes:
    " Your our o rr
    o o or uo
    rror o "
    Virtual Box then says:
A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine. and the machine execution has been stopped.
    somebody please help
If anyone's virtual box ran the win 8 successfully then please tell the specification.
    Please help. Thanx

    Hi, my vbox works.
Before installing, I changed display to Enable 3D acceleration and 2D video acceleration.
Whole install process was proper, but got death (not blackscreen of death) before getting into desktop.

Then I added memory to 2048MB, chipset=ICH-9, Enable I/O APIC. Display mem is 128MB.
Hope this will work for u.

Vmware Workstation 8 beta has support for Windows 8 Server. You can use Workstation beta without a product key: create the machine using Workstation and use it with Vmware player that's included. Just remember to copy/rename vmware-vmx.exe to vmware-vmx-debug.exe to get full speed (for x64 users: the files can be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\x64).

Edit: It doesn't actually work but at least I tried
