Which script did you use? It seems you skipped step 4. If you don't reinstall the language pack, branding and some other localization will be missing. EDIT: I replaced the resource links, because I forgot that MEGA keeps older versions of uploaded files. I don't think that caused the problem, but you may try again with the updated ones. Sorry about that.
IR5 possibly has some assemblies that got removed during resetbase, which are needed for other editions too. That's why you couldn't add them to the image. Thanks for sharing your experience, I modified the original post accordingly.
If somebody wants to play, Embedded Next (8.1) has been added to the list. This is the lightest Windows 8.1 I've ever seen. Unfortunately none of the 5 editions contain a volume license, so I don't think there's any way to activate them. Spoiler Client features can be installed manually (like Sticky Notes, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player etc.).
or install windows 8.1 embedded enterprise / pro sku similar to windows 8.1 without insane store apps similar to ltsc
Yeah, we did exactly this at the company until LTSB had arrived. One thing I don't like about Embedded Industry editions that they're not modular anymore. The last official one was Embedded 8.
What are the differences between these unreleased Embedded New (8.1) editions and the official released ones ?
Embedded Next is WES8.1, it is modular like WES7 and WES8. Embedded Industry 8.1 editions are client editions, they can be installed using the normal method and you cannot remove or add features like you do in WES.
Yo can remove all the appx with a single command from 8.x Pro/Enterprise/ProWMC, on the other hand (AFAIK) there aren't 8.1 Industry updated ISOs. In short using the Industry flavor you spare 10 seconds needed to remove the apps, but you lose hours in more update/reboot cycles. Never say never, if we can activate WES8 (or Win 8 Release Preview), we can activate everything
Hmm, nice! I think WES8.1 may be a bit different. Not sure, but its license seems to be invalid, because unlike its predecessor it refuses changing the background and forces the watermark in the corner right after installation like homebrew Bing editions. TBH I didn't spend too much time to play with it, maybe there's a solution to activate it. I leave this to more experienced members than me to find out.
@TesterMachineOS Make sure to download the RTM (2013) build of Windows 8.1. The 2014's "Update 3" release isn't compatible with the script.
Oh I understand, if I still converted from RTM. When I update it to Update 3, will it still work or will it be corrupted?
It should work with RTM. The reason IR3/4/5 is not working with this script is that MS ran resetbase on these images, so required files are missing that must be present for the new RTM editions you want to be added. Update should be OK.
