That is because WDP doesn't support upgrades from *any* version of Windows - not even 7. (The *modified* version of the WDP from the Connect InstallFair did - however, that wasn't pure WDP code.) Instead, I have the WDP and 7 on separate HDDs. (Due to my recent gaining of a much larger (1TB unformatted/931GB formatted) Caviar Eco-Green (this is actually an ex-MyBook/MyEssentials drive; the external electronics failed due to a plug-ology error by the previous owner; however, the drive itself came through swimmingly - after backing up the data to her new and larger MyBook, she gave me the old drive as payment), I have the old W7 boot drive (the smaller of the two Eco-Greens) as my WDP boot drive. The larger Eco-Green also has a larger on-drive cache (32MB vs. 8MB); however, they have identical WEI subscoring - which means exactly diddly, as PassMark has a better score on the larger drive with the larger cache - which is my W7 HDD.

Simply install the Windows Developer Preview with Tools. Yes - it's x64 only; however, it can be installed from a virtual drive.

Download the folder 8.0 inside win8 from here hxxps://skydrive(dot)live(dot)com/?cid=0eb7b1eefbbe51b5
    Then,
Paste the folder 8.0 inside C:\Program Files\Windows Kits (C: is your Windows Installation drive letter)
    You're done
