did somebody compare the explorer.exe of server and client build 10074?

 

yes i did. It's the same. If you run the server explorer.exe on Win 10 Pro, you still can't enable the old start menu/start screen

 

so its safe to say that the non-XAML start menu has not been removed from windows 10 tp but is somehow disabled

 

you have to run sconfig and choose option 6.

Any one managed to get Essentials Server installed on a VM ?

In both VMWare and Hyper-V Server installs fine, then the Essentials feature starts, gets to 17%, reboots, then doesn't do anything.
CPU spikes every few seconds and Network every few minutes but install never continues.

I also tried to add the Essentials feature to the VHD MS released, but that gets to 59% then sits there ?

 

I tried to install the essential role to the standard server and it worked (server was installed by me on a VHD via imagex /apply) , what didn't work for me is the basic installation. No matter the updates it still lacks all the "square" settings.

 

How did you get a GUI for WinSrv10TP10074 ?

 

Just upgrade from Server 9926.

 

Choose option 2 from server install config option 1 is server install without GUI

 

I had the same / a similar problem with Hyper-V'ed essentials installation, the 'role installation' did not finished and shows an error message ... I didn't try once more

I have deployed the datacenter virtual disk (in Hyper-V 2012 R2 standard) some hours before and have checked the compability with (my) progs & apps.

Later, I have installed the essentials role / feature and had the 'same' error like you, but I have started the role installation (or better: the configuration in server manager) again without any changes and now, the server runs very well, with later installed DHCP-role, too.

So, if you get an error, try to continue / start again the configuration

 

OK, I finally managed to get Essentials installed, but on the wrong VM Box

I tried GHeimnis's route of retrying on both VMWare and on Hyper-V. VMWare would error out in a few seconds. Hyper-V just got stuck at 59% again.

I then tried T-S's route of 'ImageX/apply' on Hyper-V but it still got stuck at 53% this time.

Then, I replaced the .VMDK in VMWare with MS's 'Datacentre' .VHD and it worked perfectly first time.

Who said testing beta's wasn't fun.

I installed desktop experience from server features - yet personalization is not working. Keep getting error - ms-settings - personalization - this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action blah blah blah.....
