I plan on replacing my WHS2011 w/ Server 2016 Essentials (S16E) to handle my home network backups/restores & other chores if it'll do them. After reading some of the info on setting this up, I think I'll have to wait for the RTM release & get a book as it isn't as user friendly as WHS2011 was. This TP3 is good for me to practice with though, sadly I haven't found a S16E .pdf w/ info that I can find on what I want to use & setup.
I download the ISO posted on 14th Aug. Is there any difference from 14th Aug preview release and the final release that happened on 19th Aug? Appreciate your input. I have installed the preview version and it is running fine. I believe MS has fixed most of the bug that were present in earlier preview release.
Any one else having problems with Server 2016 Essentials in a VM? The 'Configure Windows Server Essentials' wizard says it may take up to 30mins to complete. This last attempt is now over 8hrs and is still at 17%, although Task Manager says the CPU is still doing something pretty heavy.
My install in Hyper-V (Win8.1x64 host) only took 10 minutes to hit the desktop. The 30 minute WSE Configuration only took 2-3 minutes for my setup. The thing runs great in Hyper-V, for me.
Just tried again for the third time. Using External connection, Internal connection and Private connections . Same result. Wizard gets to 15%, VM reboots moves to 17% and sits there till I kill it.
Huge drag I did get this pop-up but I closed it & it went into the Configuration wizard. I didn't see the settings you are referring to here.
Those settings are different configurations for the NIC External Internal and Private Networks. Though it maybe have been an issue as Essentials likes to be the first (only) DC on a network. And I have SVR2012R2 STD running the Essentials role on my network already. Just tried again, this time I re-downloaded the ISO and left ALL default settings including en_US language and default PST time settings. It got to 15% rebooted and I now have this... Gonna try VMWare now.
OK, I guess it most be a bug or something. But, I found a work around for it. I grabbed the other ISO and installed it, then I added the Essentials role. This time it rebooted at 39% came back up at around 60% and completed fine. @MrG, Thanks for your assistance and hand holding. But, damn you must have some system there, the wizard took around 20mins on my box.
Windows Server 2016 Essentials makes a very nice Workstation OS! I hope they fix the issues with the settings app crashing, so I can get a better feel for it. But so far I'm really liking what I see! Anyone know why they included an Xbox app though, seems really off on a server?
Most server builds are 'Core' or 'Command Line' so anything in the GUI has been dragged across from the client version. And they just have gotten round to removing it yet.
NP ZaForD, I learn as I go too. My setup in Hyper-V isn't very special AFAICT. Here is my screenshots for time, or what I was timing for Configuration set-up (2-3 minutes), approx.
Does it support Bluetooth out of the box? Or do I still need to install 3rd party stack like in Server 2012/R2?
Server Essentials has a 'Media Pack' that adds codecs and DNLA support. But the SVR08/11/12 versions won't install on SVR16
It's become obsessed with my floppy reader since completing the server configuration wizard that comes up after install. Seeking it every five seconds! Looked in the registry and there is no reference to A:\ so it's quite strange... No idea, I never use Bluetooth.
