    If anyone is wondering why your WU icon (not the GWX icon) is no longer appearing in their notifications area, it has to do with the windows update client changes to support getting W10. If I recall correctly, this problem started after installing KB3065987 and whatever superseding client updates that came after that. If you are having this problem and want this icon to reappear, you have to update your Group Policy to enable "Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update" . This restored a functioning WU in the notification area for me. Simply do a new search for updates after making the change and the icon should reappear.

    Code:
    Reg Hack:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "DisableOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001
