If I am not mistaken, about the time before Windows 7 RTM was released, M$ was planning to release Vista SP3. And of now, nothing has materialized. The positive aspect of this non-release of Vista SP3 is that M$ will devote more time to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.

Yes, there is only 7 now, its a perfect and beautiful OS... and thats exactly what MS want you to believe, is exactly what they said about Vista. The truth is Vista post SP1 is very stable and reliable OS, and removing the DRM (windows server 2008) you have a fast OS.

Very interesting perspective from BOTH of you guys, and very true. I happen to believe that Vista's kernel was not too far off it's mark, but rather the implantation of the rest of the software, right down to the GUI of many of Vista's most popular applications was a completely and utterly a failure. People disliked many other things about Vista too, taken all together as too much change too fast- no wonder is was so disliked.

A Typical Vista Run Through (or maybe partially my imagination):

Maybe it was my imagination because I never sat down and counted, but it was almost as if every single thing I clicked on within Vista gave me a follow up O.S. window like: "Are you sure you want to make these changes to your computer? - Y - Are you REALLY sure you wish to make the following changes to your computer? -Y- Are you really Really sure you wish to make the following changes to your computer despite the fact that Microsoft thinks it is a dumb-ass thing to do? -Y- Now Please Reboot and Forget what you started doing upon seeing your desktop again.

People buy, install firewall, anti-virus and anti-male-ware programs to do much of what Vista suddenly released upon billions of us with no warning. I felt like a typical back-woods coon-hunter that was used to using his trusty old hunting-dog solo to go out and tree his game, but instead somebody brought in the United State's Army to help such a hunter complete his task. OFF IN THE WOODS WE GO!! Can you say: OVERKILL? I truly believe Vista did too much change for us too fast, and people did not like it for many other good reasons too.

in honesty, never really liked the vista RTM.

but after patching it with SP1, everything on this OS has been rock solid.

    Win 7 is even better!

I think Vista got a few more years to give, 4-6 years or so before it has done it's share.
SP2 have cured most of the diseases it had but an SP3 wouldn't hurt either.

But in all fairness, sure Windows 7 is far more superior in every aspect.

I was working on a gateway M-68 laptop for a friend of mine. It wouldn't boot, so I reinstalled vista home premium x64 with sp1. The clean OS still took a while to boot, logon, and etc.. The laptop tended to crash after a while from excessive heat. I decided to try win 7 home premium x64. Formatted the drive, installed win7, and now it's a race car, and doesn't get nearly as hot as it used to. Google chrome is a great combo with win7

    Laptop specs
    core 2 duo @ 2Ghz
    4gb ram
    512 mb GFX

Though, i'd never recommend anyone to buy a gateway product. Customer service and general support is terrible. I've worked on 3 gateway laptops bought on dates close to each other and they've all had dying hard drives and bad ram. I'd better stop before this turns into a rant.

What brand were the hard drives that went bad?? All WD's I suppose?
I've seen plenty of most every brand laptop with drives that fail just past the one year warranty. laptop drives live hard and die fast- it's the nature of the beast. I'm sure Vista with it's constant indexing and superfetch disk thrashing don't help preserve disk life either.
I hate Sony laptops the worst- cause you have to remove 20+ screws and remove the whole lower case half just to get at the hard drive then another 4-6 screws to remove that. Most manufactures let you pull the hard drive out by simply removing just two screws.... but not Sony

Yeah Superfetch and constant Indexing is something I always turn of wether it be Vista or 7, It trashes the HD really badly.
I never really seen a point with them since my computers run perfectly good and fast without them.
