No, 1.] OEM SLP keys are Royalty OEM keys..they are one in the same and don't require activation. They are keys the factory uses to mass install Windows from a master copy. 2.] Non SLP, OEM COA keys, must be activated by phone or online. You find these on the COA sticker on your laptop or desktop cases. They are the actual key you pay for as a backup for when you may need to reformat and do a reinstall. SLP keys are better to use instead of the sticker keys because they dont require phone or online activation.
@ Suicide Solution, thanks M8 i thought by making a sticky explaining OEM activation all would be clear but not so every day we all are still learning
OK, I am new to this. So, forgive my ignorance.... I have an Alienware system that i want to upgrade the MB from the evga 680i sli MB to an AsusP5Q MB. My hard drive is fine and i would like to just reuse it as is (after loading the chipset drivers from dvd obviously) after installing the new MB. I have heard that because the HD has OEM Vista Ultimate from Alienware that i would have to completely reinstall another new OEM version or retail version. My question here is will any of these tools allow me to just reuse my HD and reactivate my hd after installing the new mb?
Thanks for the info. Once i've dumped the SLIC and the cert. I assume that i copy the cert back over the existing cert onto the hd after the mb is installed? Then mod the bios with the slic? Then i am reactivated? (Told you i was ignorant!) Yet another dumb question, how do i mod the ASUS p5Q's bios with the new SLIC table?
Once you have the Alienware bios SLIC and Cert backed up, upload them and i will add it to the collection so bios modders can use them. Swap in the new board and see if you can get Vista to boot and detect new hardware. If you get to desktop, ask for a bios mod request in the sticky thread of this section. You will need to provide full motherboard name & model and a link to the current bios download and which SLIC you wish to use. Once you provide the Alienware SLIC it can be used to mod your bios. The Alienware cert is already in place so it should stay activated. If not, it may just require a simple command line instruction to reapply the certificate, but I have never been down this road to say 100% it will stay activated. At worse you will have to reinstall, so backup data before you swap the boards just to be sure you covered all bases.
erm.. i need some help on guiding how to install the suitable cert + keys. I hav an acer and it is running on this slic, i think. Acer[ACRSYSACRPRDCT-1025]2.0.BIN = F94A3371 so, which cert do i need to activate for vista ultimate? and the keys?
Sorry, what you do is choose update driver and change it to Standard PC. I edited the directions to show how.
