For me, most of my machines are 32 bit as they have 2-4GB. My main system has 8, so that's 64 obviously, and I have two servers also 64 bit as 2008R2 is 64 only. Personally though, I prefer 32 bit if the memory isn't an issue. Less hassles overall (drivers, software issues, etc etc), I really don't notice a performance difference between the two (and when I do, it's pretty small), and I don't run any apps that actually take advantage of it.

x64 should be used when you have 4.gb + ram. i always use x86 with my 3.gb ram :D:D:D:D

32 bit no matter what the hardware. Just too many incompatabilities with 64 bit.

The issue isn't really worth losing any sleep over considering most applications are still 32 bit. It really is a shame considering 64 bit cpus have been available to consumers for almost a decade and M$ only recently released a 64 bit OS that is worth a crap. So now we just have to wait for the rest of the digital world to catch up. But I still say if you should go with a 64 bit OS you have a 64-bit CPU which most of us do at this point. Unless of course you're talking about Windows XP, in that case I'd stick with 32 bit.

32bit has a limit of only 4gb of ram, while 64 bit is virtually limitless

Would I go 32 bit or 64 bit? Less than 4gb ram, 32 bit is a far better choice for me. Greater compatibility with software and hardware.

More than 4gb ram, definitely 64 bit. There would be no point in having more than 4gb ram otherwise.

Some software won't run under 64 bit.

    hello friends,

i'm a little bit confused about this which one to use either 32 or 64 bit issue.

    i'm done with win7upgrade advisor/compatibility report>> it says on my system evaluation " system win7 64 bit upgrade=yes," i have as of now 2GB RAM (and i'm using only 32 bit win7).

I have read in the forums saying for 32 bit min.reqt=1GB and 64 bit min.reqt=2GB; ALSO i have read as others say you should use 64 bit ONLY if you have 4GB and above of RAM.

Could someone please help me understand (coz the more i read about this 32/64 issue, the more makes me confuse >>> always one is better than the other vice-versa).

ALSO if i upgrade to 64 bit, IS IT TRUE THAT i have to RE-INSTALL programs LIKE THE very 1st time installling again???

    thanks a lot.

Personally, I don't see where you have anything to gain by upgrading to 64 bit Windows unless you upgrade or plan on upgrading to more RAM than 2GB.

64-bit Windows 7 is better, but the advantage depends on the hardware it is being run on. 2gb is probably more advantageous for Windows 7 32-bit, since 2gb is more of a late XP period amount of RAM. 4gb is the absolute minimum you should have these days, and 8gb is pretty cheap too when you go 2x4gb modules on a new computer. Its then that Windows 7 64-bit is a necessity. Much better for program access, realistic superfetch (which you only get the benefit from if you don't have to load and unload it all the time, which you do get on 4gb systems or less) etc.

64-bit is also faster, as long as you have the memory, which 2gb isn't really enough! The other times where 64-bit would be beneficial on your system is if you have a 2gb video card (or a 4gb card like the Radeon HD6990). However, if you do have such a card then only 2gb system RAM would be kinda silly...
