I have XP SP2 running on a Toshiba Tecra. Installed Windows 7, all went well, and I had turned the machine on & off several times, going to both systems.
Now, when I start XP, it gets to the point "Windows is starting up" and hangs.
Windows 7 runs fine. XP will start fine in Safe mode. Is there a way to fix this from 7 or Safe mode?
I had a backup i made with Acronis True Image which normally produces .tib files. This time they were zip. True Image tells me the last file is not the last file of the backup set. Windows 7 backup will show me the folder and files, but I can't figure out how to get to restore them. It wants to restore a backup made 3 days later. Any help would be appreciated.

Try renaming the acronis image file extension back to .tib, and try to verify the archive.

If it's a bad archive, but should be a good archive, somehow the file has been damaged. How did it get damaged...I have seen everything from overclocked systems to defective IDE ribbon cables cause file corruption.

I highly recommend using differential backup instead of incrimental when imaging a system regularly. With differential imaging, you only require the initial base image and the single differential image for a full system restore. With incrimental if even one archive is damaged in a set it's useless, and it takes an unbelieveably long time to restore a incrimental image when you have a large number of image files.

Have you tried to repair the XP install using the windows XP CD?

If it is Acronis 2009 you have choice to make .zip or .tib image files
