    Is there a bog standard key for install before using the toolkit?, or can one install this with no key?

    I've tried out all versions offered including Server 2016 and I still think I will wait for Enterprise S. It is so clean, no fluff and feels really fast even on older hardware.

    You can do that on Pro/enterprise as well. So what's the point of suggesting education as a solution?

    The other you could get it for free, if you are a student.
