This must be the 3rd time that I write about those two programs but it is worth it.
For antivirus try clamwin. It has no real time protection hence zero impact. When you want to scan the memory or that file that you just downloaded you do just this. Right click and scan in the context menu.
For firewall try Windows Firewall Control. Ideally an older version I use 4.5. It is just a front end for windows firewall which lets you allow or block whatever you want on a popup window. The program has an installation of 300kb but it is extremely powerful.

Both of those solution work the most effectively in combination with the tool that acer mentioned in the second post :)

Clamwin is a free and open source software and works on anything from Windows 95 (I am not joking) to windows 11.
Edit: Clamwin doesn't have live scanner and this is the main reason of being so light. The user must initiate the scan manually if needed with right click and scan.
Windows Firewall Control bought out at some point from the original developer. If you cannot find version 4.5-4.8 you can try out the freeware version of the program which is around version 6 if I remember.

The oldest one I found to download was 4.8, which the antivirus detected as a virus or malicious, I don't remember. Anyway, while I was searching on Google, clicking on the results and opening tabs, one of those results already started to download a malicious file, which is a case that this option of yours would not detect, okay.
One question, is there a virus or malicious file that infects the computer just by downloading the file without executing it?

Which antivirus do you use? Windows Defender nowdays will block everything it doesn't like. It will scream VIRUUSSSS first but then if you look the details you will see hacktool. I use virustotal.com when in doubt.
What you say that it tried to download other files though is not good. Probably you got a rotten source.

My understanding is that a virus needs to be run in order to affect you. The thing though is that "run" can mean many things like you hovering over a file potentially. If you are unsure make a virtual machine with VirtualBox and just use it as a sandbox for things that you don't trust.

You can try Avast, it's not that heavy on system resources and has gaming mode in Win7, 10, 11.

I was using Avira, on my Windows it doesn't have WIndows Defender, security center and firewall, I just left the firewall core to be used with other security software.
I used Symantec recommended by my friend and I really like it, it's really very light, now I'm going to test the other friend's firewall with ClamWin.
Any ideas for an anti-malware extension for Firefox that doesn't run on the system, only in the browser?

Just one clarification regarding clamwin so that people don't have a false sense of security. Clamwin works manually. There is no live scaner (hence being very light weight). When ever you want to scan a file you do right click and scan. The user initiates the scan always.

Im not a virus coder .. but i've come to similar conclusion.
As far as i can tell, just like COVID, computer virus is a hoax by Bill Gates.
WinDefender is pretty much all i've been using since Win10.
    Will look into ClamAV.

hello everyone.. I have Stupidly opened a Virus parading as kiddions mod menu for Grand Theft Auto V on YOUTUBE.

i formatted my 1TB SSD and deleted partitions i've scanned my pc with ESET smart security and malwarebytes and says my PC is clean.. kaspersky Rescue disk says my pc is clean.

Should i use AVAST internet security or BITDefender & Malwarebytes? or AVG or kaspersky. i cant afford kaspersky for one year license. i need a free 30 days anti virus or anti malware i bought Malwarebytes for 2 years.

HOW Can i STOP the virus from interfering with my Downloads?

Windows defender is enough for me. Any antivirus will make some affect on the performance of your PC.
