Is there a reason you suggest 8.8.1 as opposed to the other releases?

V8.8.1 is actually the last version to be created and is a fork based on version 8 so it xcopies all the files rather than using dism to install the packages.

Some people report better success installing with it on PCs where V12 doesn't work and it also has most of the workarounds that were required built-in.

Bien vu ! I can confirm this handmade solution totally fixed the issue in my SP4!! I've done a little more because i copy/pasted the entire Ehome folder on another drive (actually D:\Ehome) and now the freeze is gone. this is moving in the right direction

I'm using the free version of Macrium Reflect to do image backups. It supports manual, scheduled and differential backups. It's been used a few times for bare metal recovery since 1709 :)

I don't know how but I went back to windows 10 (My primary system in my dual boot PC is still Windows 8.1 with modded menĂ¹) and the problem with the video of windows media center is gone.

I'm not even sure which codec I'm using now since I've tried everything weeks ago, some days ago (with no changes) I've tried WMC with still the error, today no changes and is perfect :D

Yeah, I do daily, weekly and monthly system backups to USB HDDs but any drive that is connected gets trashed when the PC is restarted.

Even though Windows is set not to update and not to restart it does whatever it pleases so backups are sometimes lost.

That was what happened this time and there had been too may changes made since the last monthly backup so I fell back on the most suitable automatic snapshot. Anyway, I now believe I misunderstood
why windows\ehome was empty - I just happened to restore the snapshot taken just after 1709 got installed.

Thank you so much! This made MCE fine in 1709, also in full screen mode, for me too! Before I used your trick with coping the ehome folder, MCE was working OK as long as I did not touch the volume control. That made the Windows 10 Volume indicator appear on screen, freezing the whole computer until I clicked a volume button a second time. After using the program directory instead, the volume indicator does not appear adjusting volume. Thanks again Patrik!!!

I don't know if this help at all but here goes....

When my PCs (which had all been happily been running V12) updated to 1709, MC was removed as would be expected. Having read that V8.8.1 was 'better' in some ways, I installed V8.8.1 rather than V12 but couldn't live with not being able to run MC full screen in an RDP session and decided to uninstall V8.8.1 and reinstall V12. Two of the three worked fine but I had error 0x800f0922 on the third one and I ended up rolling it back to after 1709 was installed but before I installed V8.8.1.

I tried to install V12 again but got the same error. So I manually ran the steps in the V12 installer one by one and had a message stating that one of the packages was not applicable to the computer. I now had MC half installed so I ran the V12 uninstaller and it said that access to one of the media center packages was denied but appeared to complete OK.

I rebooted and ran the installer again and it worked.

It seems to me that, because the installers work in a different way, you need to uninstall V12 with the V12 uninstaller and uninstall V8.8.1 with the V8.8.1 uninstaller. Quite how much of Media Center is removed or changed by Windows Upgrade is unknown.

I have since installed both versions on freshly installed 1709 systems and they both work perfectly.

I don't know if this will help but try deleting or renaming the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome after an uninstall and before a reinstall.

I've been messing about with Nirsoft Advanced Run and it seems to get rid of the fast forward and rewind breakup/lockup problems.

I can fast forward and fast backward as often as I like and I haven't had it lock up once so far and I don't get the horrible picture breakup.

These are the settings I used:

    advancedrun.png

I think this would get round the problem with freezing in 1709 as well but as I explained previously, I don't suffer with that issue so I have no way of telling.

    Hope this helps someone out.

    Hi all,

I just took this months windows updates, I'm not running the creators update yet because I fear it'll break WMC.

Anyway this months updates have broken my WMC install in that I'm seeing 2 additional tuners (I have 2 not 4) and when I scan nothing is found.

Do I need to uninstall and reinstall v8.1.1 to fix?

    Cheers all

Edit: After performing an additional reboot of my box, the extra 2 tuners disappeared and I could scan for TV channels and it's all working fine.

Can anyone confirm SMB 1.0/CIFS is (unchecked in 1709) in Windows Features? SMB_1.0_CIFS_FileSharingSupport003.jpg

Anyone know how far back this Feature was turned off?

Just looked at five of mine and it is enabled on all of them. Two are fresh installs and the others are upgrades/updates.

SMB Direct is only enabled on one of them, which is a fresh install (how can it be that two identical machines installed from the same DVD have different settings).

AFAIK, I never enabled any of these features.
