That sounds like sweet music to me! So I take it even the DCH drivers works out of the box? Or do you need to manually download and install the control panel appx separate with Powershell?
Dunno if I am further derailing the thread here, but The site and the tweaks have not been updated in years, and while I tried to get some of that to run on a virtual machine and failed using the start here.cmd I would appreciate anyones opinion as to the reliability of this solution for srv2022, maybe someone is working on an updated version? I can of course post the errors I got if wanted.
While the sites cover the most fundamental basic stuff converting your Server OS to a Workstation one I have always found experimenting and used trial and error method quite rewarding. I guess that it all depends on how much time you want to spend at the end of the day. But, yes I sure as hell wish there were more guides in existence regarding converting Server to Workstation. The interest might not be what it used to be. For example, I used 2K3 Server more than XP back in the days and I also used 2K8 and 2K8 R2 frequently. Back then the community were more active at his forum.
Yep its a trial and error method. I just do all the tweaks manually. Done it for so long just comes natural.
Is Server LTSC 2022 viable as a gaming OS? Does it strip down anything that might be required in modern games? I don't care for the Microsoft Store, but I want to play Metro Exodus Enhanced which can't run on LTSC 2019 due to missing ray-tracing related libraries.
@RokkumanX Please give some arguments (Server vs LTSC). May be as a kind of shortlist of the most important things for you. Thanks.
No OneDrive no MetroApps Very few SystemApps | Removed all Un Needed Features Including Server Core & Server Manager GUI Plus All Capabilities Except PWSH ISE from Server22 Standard Desktop Experience | Super Duper Cool @RokkumanX | Removing Defender from Features Has Removed Defender from OS No any Tweaking Needed | Super Charm |
Edge Chromium is There & Its Removed via Abbodi1406 EdgeCR Uninstall Script . Worked Flawlessly Solid | Plus Very Less Size LCU Just 194 mb for Latest Including SSU. Really Cool |
But that referred to Server 2016, which was basically a server version of Windows 10 19H1 1607 (build 10.0.18362 10.0.14393). Now Server 2022 is a completely different build (10.0.20348), which is in between Windows 10 (10.0.19044 as of now) and Windows 11 (10.0.22000). I would even dare to say it's closer to Windows 11 than 10. And in such case - is it affected by the W11 Ryzen L3 cache bug? If it is, will Microsoft and AMD prioritize fixing it in a server system where FPS in games doesn't matter? Edit: corrected the Server 2016 build details.
I've installed one on a VM yesterday to play with it while waiting for LTSC 2021 and so far I'm quite impressed. I like the fact I can completely uninstall Edge or Defender, but at the same time I might have to install Defender back as my preferred antivirus software requires a business version to install. Which AV did you used? And have you noticed any other commonly used application to refuse to install or work because it's a server system and not a workstation? I remember converting Windows Server 2003 to a workstation with NTSwitch tool. It even replaced the Windows logo shown by the "winver" tool. But it doesn't seem to work for Server 2022 and I couldn't find anything like NTSwitch for any of the more recent Server versions. I'm also working on a Store package to install on Server 2022, similar to the packages available for LTSC versions. So far the Store itself fails to install because "The package can only be installed on the following device families: Windows.Xbox", but I found a potential solution (edit the appx and change Windows.Xbox to Windows.Universal), so I will give it a try. I think the only way to properly evaluate that is to compare this result with the Windows 10 numbers on the same PC. I should be able to test it on a laptop with 3500U and compare results for W10 21H2 19044.1348 and Server 2022 20348.350.
With my laptop, no I haven't had a single issue with any installed software so far. As for my gaming rig, I can't say for sure that everything will work out of the box. The top most priority on that is to be able to use emulators and watch movies that I've ripped to iso files with DVDFab which I then playback with Leawo Blu-Ray Player and I also got a couple of GOG games and GFWL games. Nothing to extreme but I'll report once I finally made the leap there to.
