Hello I recently found an old dell latitude laptop collecting dust in my garage while in the process of moving. As soon as I boot it up theres a message that says "This system is protected by a password authentication system" and its asking for an admin/system password that I cant remember for the life of me. Is there any way of possibly bypassing it? Any ideas and help are very much appreciated. Thank you for your help. The service tag is G1XW6G1 and the system number is G1XW6G1-3A5B.
Thanks tqhoang but Im following the hdr recovery method that you listed and downloaded an older bios file and tried to extract it using a file extractor program but getting an error message : "Can not open file 'C830_A14.EXE as archive." Is it because of the program that Im using or is there another tool I can use to do this?
Thanks LatinMcG but the same thing happens when I try to extract the file. I used winzip this time and same error message came up. A few of my friends tried it as well and they too got the same thing.
What LatinMcG is saying is Don't use an extractor program use the bios executable itself to do the extraction, for example as follows: D830A15.exe /writehdrfile ...T
So is that some kind of command line execution? If so I just happen to try it and nothing. Im just too much a noob at this
Ok i got it. This is exactly what i typed in to create the hdr file (after getting a msg saying d830_a14 hdr file written) c:\>d830_a14.exe -writehdrfile. Hopefully this is correct due to message appearing.
Ok some progress so far so my next step is continue with the hdr recovery process at the step where i have extracted the rom file from d830_a14.exe (in which d830_a14.rom was created) and using a decode tool to convert the rom file into a bin file as listed in the steps. What tool would be used to do that? Thanks again guys for all the help so far
Take the HDR file that you extracted above and put it the root of a USB stick/pen drive and give it a 7.3 filename format. Ex: "D830A14.HDR" Put the USB stick in your D830 and start the HDR recovery. If it works, then the fans should kick on high and after a minute or so, the machine should reboot itself.
Ok so after a few tries the battery light did come on red and blinked and the loud fan noises happened. It only lasted briefly for about maybe 5 seconds and it turned off. Waited for a reboot but it didnt happen. So after stating about the loud fan noises I assume it worked?
Ok so i turned it back on and it still has the same service tag and system number as when i first posted before. Should that number have changed in some way? Also I saw it still had the BIOS revision A16 upon booting up.
Then the HDR recovery didn't work. Try again with a different USB port, especially one on the rear. Also make sure you don't have any other files on the USB stick.
Ok so I plugged the usb with the 830A14.hdr (exact name) to the rear usb port on the laptop and did the exact same steps as instructed but the same thing happened. Fan stayed on for 5 secs then turned off with no reboot. Its also worth noting that a brief message came up stating invalid configuration information
The filename needs to be a 7.3 format. "D830A14.HDR" You shouldn't see anything on the screen except the normal BIOS screen after it reboots.
I see. I checked my usb for the file name and its named D830A14.hdr (i noticed i didnt put the D infront of the 830 as posted above) and also is the only file on the usb. So in this case it should be all caps since its case sensitive apparently. Altogether it should be all D830A14.HDR and not .hdr. Ok thanks again Ill give this a shot.
FWIW, FAT is not case sensitive. Also I would suggest you try with every single USB port on your laptop. Not sure if you followed the directions exactly but make sure you remove the battery...then hold the END key and plug in the power cable...when the battery LED is amber, let go of the END key.
Here is the utility to generate the password. Dropbox.com/s/c8rbgfouuh1xrlk/dell_595b_2a7b_keygen.zip
Please read the entire thread first. He needs to revert his BIOS to an older version before using the password generator.
