Hey Captain! I just realized that you had a link to my script on the first post all this time! Thank you!!!!
Yep, I've had it there for several months. I thought I made you aware of it, but I may not have. I've downloaded and saved a copy of your December 2023 script. I haven't tested your script in several months, so I plan to do it after February 2024 patch Tuesday. I'm waiting to see if there will still be updates for Server 2008 after January 2024 patch Tuesday.
Thanks for this guide.. I still love vista and miss it. But!! i have forgotten how slow and sluggish vista really is.. I've been at this now in a VM for over 2 hours..
You're welcome. I install and use it in the normal manner and not in virtual machine mode. I use it in a Dell Precision M6700 17.3" laptop which has an Intel Core i7-3720QM processor and 16 GB of DDR3 RAM and a Western Digital 250 GB solid state drive. I have no problem with it being sluggish.
Yeap I can confirm this. I have both VMs and laptops with Vista. The VMs are much slower in comparison unless they are on SSD (but then you kill the SSD). What you can do to improve your situation a bit is to have the VM on a HDD that is not used the same time as the VM (e.g. not in your C drive). Parallel writes will definitely slow you to a crawl. Then allocate at least 8 GB of RAM if you can and deactivate the pagefile. You can also deactivate the file indexing. The above steps are mandatory if you are on SSD.
Thank you to all the regular tech boffins who enable us to continue using Vista. My Ultimate x64 has been running very well until the desktop icons moved themselves to the left side and every time I reboot they are back on the left again. I have tried various tweaks to no avail. Has anyone experienced this problem and found a working solution? Happy New Year!
Does anyone know if the upcoming "patch Tuesday" will be the last month that Windows Server 2008 (not 2008 R2) updates will be available to patch Windows Vista SP2 64-bit? I did some researching, and I cannot find anything that shows Windows Server 2008 updates will be available after January 9, 2024.
