I did everything like this and nothing happened and I placed both the script and the update in the folder and ran it as an administrator. A cmd window appeared for one second and disappeared after rebooting the system. When installing the update, it says the system is not compatible.
Please help me. When I run file install.cmd in step 20 it writes WUC 7.7. 6003.20555 will be installed. continue [y/n]. But I can not type anything here. I click letter y and nothing happens.I have noticed, that English language automatically changes for Russian, when I run the file. Only russian and english languages are installed in Windows. So I ask you to solve the problem or advice other ways to install WUC. I can normally type in usual command prompt. No antiviruses are installed.

Hi! Is Vista/WK2008R1 still getting updates in 2025? From what I see the answer is yes, but how, and until when? By the way, I was here before (few years ago), greetings to anyone who remembers!
Hello @ExtremeGrief ! The best guess is that it will continue being updated for as long WS2008R2 is getting updates since they are so similar. As of how it is the same as before. No drastic changes. Abbodi has made some nice .net repacks which you can install directly rendering the dotnetesubypass a bit obsolete. Other than that business as usual.
I forgot to say.. since last April the windows update stopped working on vista but legacy update works just fine on physical machines. On VMs is hit and miss and I don't understand why
The biggest difference between real hardware and VMs is usually timing. VMs (type 2) do not have a stable clock as they are virtualized. This leads to timeouts and and race conditions, especially if the Host or other VMs are also busy. Retrying usually fixes that eventually.
I have retried many times. Sometimes I delete the software distribution in between and other times without deleting. Last time I was trying on Vista64 enterprise and I kept clinking on "try again" without touching the software distribution folder. The result was pretty much the same. End then one of my VMs (Vista64 Ultimate) decided to successfully scan out of the blue and continued scanning without a problem on the next patch Tuesday. So now I just leave the software distribution alone on this one. Anyway it is not a big deal. I always have few laptops multibooting around
Yeah it's not only clock instability (and lower timer precision). The VMs usually get lower RAM, storage, and CPU cores assigned. Plus, in non-specialized VMs, the virtual GPU VRAM is powered by system RAM, which is always slower. This lets VMs run with much less performance than real bare metal. Software that requires fast and precise timing, or having low timeouts set might consistently or inconsistently fail. Has simply not been written with VM in mind.
My VMs have 8GB of Ram which should be fine given that WU peaks at 5 something. But Most of the time I was running them with 2 cores. Now that you mention all the details I got interested on trying with more cores and see how it goes. Video ram is 256MB but probably is taken from the main ram as you say. The storage is 64GB maximum but expanding dynamically. I never had a problem with the actual WU before April but I guess that the indirection of the proxy add some pressure. Thank you for the explanations!! Do you have any suggestions on type 1 VMs as a home user?
I think it end MSE for Windows Vista / I don't know how on Windows 7 now. Last update database from 25 days ago. Interesting is newer version (after numbers i saw history updates) and MSE on Windows Vista doesn't update. VMware make more problems than I thought. Smaller problematic is Virtualbox. But I don't know if finally is fixed problems what is blackscreen on Virtualbox after Vista updated with Windows Server 2008 patches. And only on Windows hosts with turned that Microsoft's protections. Someone can check? P.S. Vbox 7.1.6 have big error. 7.1.7 was in beta and there fixed that error to can't turn virtual machines, but problems with Vista was still.
SEBA33: I updated my Windows Vista SP2 64-bit test laptop a few days ago to install the March 2025 updates. MSE 4.4.304.0 doesn't update its definition file, so I do it manually. I load its main window, then I run the previously downloaded executable file, then I patiently wait. Within 30 - 45 seconds, the definition file version updates in MSE. Just a reminder to you and everyone else. I do NOT use a virtual machine when I install and test Windows Vista. My test laptop has a 3rd generation Intel Core i3 processor and 16 GB of RAM.
I understand. But it worked normally earlier after putted KB4474419 and Windows Server 2008 updates mean automatically updated.
