ExtremeGrief: Assuming you're using the guide: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/th...s-vista-sp2-64-bit-beyond-its-eol-date.83461/ Where in the process is "checking for updates" stalling on you? Depending on the speed of your computer and its connection, and if you're using ethernet or wireless, it can take several minutes before updates are displayed.
Nevermind it just took a while, it finished in like an hour. My internet on my host PC is 500mb and I'm using VMWare with VMWare tools.
Okay, good. I have a dedicated test machine, so I install and update Vista in normal mode and not in VM mode.
Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it went when I'm done. I may be delayed a couple of days. I had a reaction from the COVID booster shot and feel a bit under the weather.
xrononautis: I did a new clean install and update of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit today. I ran into a glitch with the initial batch of 200 Vista updates, but I eventually got it resolved after about 3 hours of work - read the warning in step #19. I thought I was going to have a successful conclusion, but I ran into another glitch after I deployed the batch file with the 28 SOQU and other updates (February 2020 - November 2021). The batch file deployed and displayed a black window and showed all 28 updates installing. After it was done in a few minutes, the black window disappeared. There was no prompt to restart, and there was none of the usual configuration during shutdown and restart. I checked the update history in both locations, and I did not see those 28 updates listed. Can you read steps #22 - #27 of the guide and see if I messed up somewhere? Here is a screenshot of the coding of the script that you suggested I use. Did I copy and paste it correctly before I changed it from a .txt to a .bat file?
It's never a good idea to install so many updates at once. I would first install all the "Update for Windows Vista" updates as they may fix bugs with windows update, then the other updates like platform updates and only then security updates and monthly rollup.
xrononautis: This is a continuation of post #110. I ran the script again today with only the 22 security only quality updates. Each one appeared in the small black window and added itself to the growing list. After all 22 had appeared in about 3 minutes, the small black window disappeared. I did a restart and then checked "View update history" and "View installed updates". None of the 22 were in the list. Am I doing something wrong somewhere?
I had no luck with the mass installer batch script actually installing the 22 SOQU's or the 22 SMQR's. I decided to revert back to manually installing each SMQR between February 2020 and November 2021. It took about 3 hours, but I was successful. My guide has been edited to reflect what I did on November 28 - 30, 2021.
Nope, all 22 SMQR updates installed successfully in sequence from February 2020 to November 2021. I tried bypassing all the other SMQR updates and installing only the November 2021 SMQR update, but a "This update does not apply to your system" message appeared. I don't know if different hardware has a different effect on the install process, but it's been very frustrating.
> Warning! If the October 2021 KB5006750 servicing stack update appears, do NOT install it. Doing so will cause Windows Update to display error code C8000266. I installed it and my WU still works
ExtremeGrief: The KB5006750 update has to be delayed until a certain point in the process. If it's deployed too early, it breaks Windows Update and displays the error code. See the new guide for details.
I did a new clean install and update on December 2nd and finally had success with the batch script and 2 servicing stack updates (steps #26 and #28 and #30). I went through the entire process again on December 3rd to make sure it was successful. I am happy to say it was successful both times. The previous guide has been removed and replaced today with a new guide. Thanks to the persons here who were helpful along the way. Enjoy.
xrononautis: I finally was able to get the mass install batch script to work properly. See the new guide in post #1 for details. Thanks!
