Vista works fine on Virtualbox v6.1.50 Version 7 was giving me a few issues (black screen was one of them on 32bit versions of vista). Update: It has been a few months since I tried the VMs. There shouldn't be any new updates though since January.
Partially right. But on Virtualbox sha-wuc as sha-wuc don't make bsods. On VMware make. and I don't know why. Maybe vbs disturb it or I don't know what. Mean to VMware
Updates make bsods, not sha-wuc sky will not fall if you did not install the very last Monthly Rollup check to see which previous one is working
I also hope so, I was looking it up and it seems like in definition version 1.453 and later they made a ton of changes to the engine that no longer work properly on vista, so we'll see
I found a workaround for installing all Server 2008 updates on Vista x86. It seems like Windows Update starts showing the errors everyone has been seeing after installing KB5071812 and KB5016891, which are the SSU and ESU enablement packages. If you skip installing these updates and the IE9 KB5066840 update (steps 16-18 in the original guide), you are able to patch as Vista, install all Vista updates, then patch as Server 2008 and install all non-ESU updates. Once all non-ESU updates are installed, you can install KB5071812, KB5016891, and IE9 KB5066840 as you would through the original guide, and then manually install the latest Server 2008 quality rollup (KB5073697) and .NET quality rollup (KB5066742). Of course, Windows Update won't work after installing the latest SSU and ESU enablement package, but this should get Vista completely up to date.
I had these same issues, I found that rerunning the patcher if WU really didn't want to work helped get it to finally check for updates
I found that sometimes it just does that. Rerunning the patch script to repatch as Server 2008 may fix it
Please note the following: While the updates will seem to install properly, some packages inside them are deemed applicable only to Server 2008 by MS. As a result, not all packages actually install, leaving Vista not fully patched. Vista still is 6002 (SP2), Server 2008 got raised to 6003 at some point. These new packages applying only to 6003 are the ones skipped.
I run my script a week or two ago on one of my thinkpads and the windows update actually worked. I am pretty sure that I had previously updated somewhere around May 2025 (again via my script and probably WU didn't work after or before the update). I am not sure though if I want to go down the rabbit hole again I might try again at some point and see what happens.
Both, as far as I know. Was the last generation where there still was a 32bit Server pendent. 32bit did not get as much care by MS as x64 did, so, there might be additional issues.
