Windows Vista SP2 64-bit is currently up to date to November 2021 in my laptop. I'm waiting to see which of these updates is listed in the Microsoft Update Catalog site for December 2021 patch Tuesday: Security Only Quality Update IE9 Cumulative Update Servicing Stack Update That'll determine what changes need to be made in the current guide for those who want to make a clean install and then get Windows Vista SP2 64-bit up to date to December 2021. For those who are already up to date to November 2021, installing the relevant updates should be all that's needed, but I'll find out for sure in the next 2 - 3 days.
December 2021 "patch Tuesday" results: There is no new Servicing Stack Update for Windows Server 2008 64-bit, so step #16 of the guide is unchanged. There is no new Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 9, so step #17 of the guide is unchanged. There IS a new Security Only Quality Update (KB5008271) for Windows Server 2008 64-bit. That will increase the number of updates from 22 to 23 that are obtained in step #25, and then are installed in step #28. The above applies ONLY for those who are doing a clean install and update of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit after December 2021 "patch Tuesday". For those who have already used the guide which was tested before December 2021 "patch Tuesday", the only thing that is needed is to obtain and manually install KB5008271. Doing that will bring Windows Vista SP2 64-bit up to date from November 2021 to December 2021.
Are you saying that occurs when you perform step #17 in the guide? I did it on 2 separate occasions and dates, and it worked fine for me.
It worked now. I got fully updated vista. What is the reason to mass install all rollups tho? I only installed December 2021 one and it was working fine.
ExtremeGrief: The mass install of the 23 Security Only Quality Update's (February 2020 - December 2021) only needs to be done after doing a clean install of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit and arriving at step #17 of the guide - which was updated on December 15, 2021. If you have already updated Windows Vista SP2 64-bit to November 2021, all you need to do is obtain the December 2021 Security Only Quality Update (KB5008271) from the Microsoft Update Catalog site and then manually install it.
xrononautis: When I ran Windows Update after the last "patch Tuesday", the only update it displayed and installed was Malicious Software Removal Tool. It did not display Security Monthly Quality Rollup or Security Only Quality Update or any other update. I obtained Security Only Quality Update (KB5008271) from the Microsoft Update Catalog site and manually installed it. ExtremeGrief appears to have manually installed Security Monthly Quality Rollup (KB5008274) and not Security Only Quality Rollup (KB5008271) for December 2021.
ExtremeGrief / E_B_M: I plan to do another test clean install and update of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit later today or tomorrow. Instead of using the batch file to mass install 23 SOQU's (February 2020 - December 2021), an attempt will be made to do a stand-alone install of the current SMQR (December 2021). Depending on whether this is successful or not, and if the batch file is needed or not, the last 6 steps of the guide will be edited and changed as needed.
I'm currently in the middle of step #20 of the current guide. If all goes well, I should be done by late in the evening. I'll post the results tomorrow morning.
I'm all done with the new clean install and update. All steps that were listed after step #24 in the previous guide has been eliminated or replaced, which has resulted in a noticeably shortened guide. I hope posts #151 and #152 have been answered to your satisfaction.
Unfortunately my VM crashed & burned just prior to testing "new" method (1 SMQR vs 20 something SOQR's)... see attached images lost network connectivity (cable unplugged) & thus no access to WU. Spoiler: VM Crash
I don't do a clean install and update in VM mode, so some issues probably occur in VM mode that wouldn't normally occur. My test machine has 2 separate SSD drives, so I switch from one to the other when doing a clean install and update in the normal manner.
Just to let U know the issue was with the Virtual network on the host, not the VM, repair install on host fixed the connectivity issue. You are correct, physical machine much better as I had several freezes & the aforementioned crash in VM... hard shutdown from host thru Task Manager was the cause of the crash, although I don't know what I did wrong.
