My test machine has USB gigabit ethernet and USB 802.11ac wireless connections. I prefer to use ethernet when testing because it tends to be faster and more stable. Anyway, I'm glad that installing 1 SMQR works as well as installing 23 SOQU's. It allows the entire process to be completed quicker, and it reduces the number of steps needed. But without ESU LPP installed (which breaks WU and displays a code error), new updates won't be automatically detected every month. It's no big deal though because they can be searched for and obtained from MUC and manually installed.
@CaptainSpeleo Should I send updated root certificate package to December 2021? The one in OP is from 2016.
Which Root Certificate update for Vista are you referring to? The only one that I'm aware of is the January 2016 one in step #3 of the guide. If there's a newer one, it's my guess xrononautis would've mentioned it a long time ago.
The Root Certificate supposedly should be installed (in conjunction with .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 4.6.1) before any drivers are installed. That supposedly insures that all drivers successfully install and work properly. I'm not aware of any custom-made Root Certificate. If there is, I assume it also needs to be installed first (in conjunction with .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and 4.6.1) before any drivers are installed. Some input from xrononautis and others here would be welcome.
Root Certificate Update should be the first thing installed, then .NETs and drivers. I tested my custom Root Certificate Update on VBOX and the Guest Additions installed without problems (Before updating certs, it failed). I can make a guide on how to make custom cert updates.
I've been doing it in this order and everything has gone fine: NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and then 4.6.1 - restart Root Certificate - restart Drivers (starting with chipset) - restart after each install
I'm not planning on doing another test clean install and update of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit anytime soon, so I'll have to decline your offer. Don't custom-made root certificates need to be used in VM install mode and not in normal install mode?
That makes sense. I would be willing to test also. I found an old Dell Inspiron 3542 i5 collecting dust in my garage & will install although drivers may (will) be a problem.
xrononautis: I should reverse steps #2 and #3 in the guide and show the install of Root Certificate as the very first step after the install of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit?
You may be onto something, xron. My attempts to install KB5008274 manually resulted in 2 BSOD crashes on 16/17 December so I restored to 15 December. The third attempt went better yesterday and I got IE9 updated and KB5006671 installed but installing KB5008274 manually crashed again - yet only at the final stage of configuration step 3 following the reboot. I am bamboozled. I´m tempted to leave things as they are now as WU finds nothing or I could restore to 15 December again and just not attempt to install KB5008274 at all. I followed the Captain´s rejigged guide carefully from #17. Any thoughts? Anyone had a similar experience?
