I have just now run the script WindowsUpdate MiniTool. Gonna report the result The MiniTool.exe shows the full scope of updates. Do we have a tool to get rid of them? Just to know.... The irritating popup the mega gigantic Update Assistant is back at it - meaning it must be related to one of the March updates - should I uninstall them all?
I don't know if there's a tool. I found this on the net. Haven't been able to try it: To disable Update Assistant: In control panel uninstall Upgrade Advisor to Windows 10. Delete these folders: C:\Windows10Upgrade C:\WINDOWS\UpdateAssistant C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download (you'll lose your update history) There may be a better way, I don't know. Maybe someone can chime in.
I have used that suggestions - 10GB - can you believe it? it is astonishing when you acknowledge the fact that I almost didn't connect the machine to the internet. With shadowdefender on, I have been playing games for two days, more or less an hour of gameplay with ShadowDefender OFF. That sufficed to d/l 10GB of garbage.... speechless.
first: THANK YOU SO MUCH @pf100 , in the name of our helpless customers too! i tested the wrapper on my own machine (already infected by kb4023057), result: after study of log files created by remshell ms seams to be helpless a bit! i was really upset seeing this after many frustration with the mess microsoft is causing! today i tested the wrapper in a virtual 1607 machine which was NOT infected, result: THERE IS HOPE!!! ^^ the update is under control and if further steps are always taken careful, this is the solution that will work "longterm", for me and many customers from now on i think! i will reinstall my home machine, now i learned the basics to handle wumt with the script, and will shout out loud YEA when i start windows update first, when all work is done AND THEN lan cable plugged in ^^ ---- if system is infected, there might be a second software distribution folder in program files or program data! you wont get rid of it i guess, i continue to gather traces (log's, etl's and so on) of remshell, maybe for legal reasons too. i have proof ms broke machines from business customers, and they know what they are doing!!!.. to stay in control you need to keep the s**t in distance!!
hi @pf100 i have downloaded WUMTWrapperScript from geeks site , I uninstalled the DWS tool that i was using before , also removed all the HOSTS file entries that this tool put in to disable windows updates and then ran WUMTWrapperScript . It searched for window updates successfully without any error but didnt find any updates as i am on windows redstone 4 rtm ( latest i guess ). my question is am i good now ? i closed the WUMTWrapperScript will windows update also stop as soon as i close this script GUI ? btw after closing tool i checked via services.msc it says windows update service is disbaled ! is it fine ? Thanks in advance.
updates for windows 10 appear on second Tuesday of every month.(10 April next patch day) script will disable updates as soon as you close wumt gui. disabled update service is fine. but if you want store and defender updates to run properly you can run "configurator" script and set it to n. from now on your update service will be enabled but automatic updates wont happen(its not 100% full proof, but in my one month test it didnt install any updates.and afaik there is no proof that how can automatic updates happen after setting configurator" script to n)
Hi @Ahsan. The short answer to your three questions is yes. I know you didn't ask about the store and defender specifically, but it should be mentioned. So, to add to what @ShiningDog said: 1) you can also use the store after WUMT checks for updates but BEFORE closing WUMT 2) or you can use the configurator to turn on the update service temporarily and use the store and then when you're done you can use the configurator to turn the update service back off again. As long as the windows update service is on as described in (1) or (2), in an administrator command prompt you can update windows defender using the command "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate -MMPC" Personally, I use the script with option 1 or 2 to use the store, and a third party antivirus, but I don't leave the windows update service on all the time. I just check manually every patch tuesday. The configurator was designed for convenience of using the store and getting defender updates at any time at the cost of probable unwanted updates. We'll see in the coming months how well it works but in the meantime I can't recommend leaving updates on all the time with the configurator if you want to be sure you don't get updates unexpectedly.
@pf100 thanks again. One question pondering in mind is that windows built in tools such as defender , i personally think it is not so powerful and intelligent to catch the best written malware or other exploits , i am using malwarebytes premium instead and have disabled windows defender from many years . Do you really think defender is good and should be running all the times ? is it as good as malwarebytes premium 3.4.5? i always keep only one anti virus on system , so either it can be defender or malware . currently i hav defender disabled by winaero tweaker tool and running malwarebytes premium. Same goes for their defragmenter which is too bad and i always use Diskeeper to provide better I/O performances.
@Ahsan, I always disable defender and I use malwarebytes premium too. I trust malwarebytes 10x more than defender. Diskeeper is very good too. I think you have a good plan.
hi @pf100 do you think that setting connections as metered solves the update problem, as it only auto update most essential updates like defender definitions and such. and it doesnt download monthly big updates. am i something missing here? can anyone elaborate more on which type of updates metered connection can download and how it will handle major upgrade in home edition.is it possible that home edition can stay on rs3 forever as long as connections is set on metered.
@ShiningDog A lot of people use the metered connection solution. A couple of concerns I have is, 1) if you update or change your ethernet or wifi driver it turns metering off for that connection and 2) We're not just dealing with the Windows Update Service anymore, we now have usoclient, sihclient, waasmedic, and remsh (rempl) which I have a feeling is going to force you to update to RS4 metered or not. With that being said I don't know everything and my script is but one solution of many. I'm not saying my way is best. Only time will tell that. I don't think anyone is going to know for sure if metered connections will stop RS4 until weeks or months after RS4 is released. Maybe @Enthousiast or @abbodi1406 can shed more light on this since it's the method they use last time I checked (actually they use metered connections with WUMT in notification mode).
@pf100 your 1st concern can be solved easily. by tweaking registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\DefaultMediaCost all connection can be set by default as metered.(ethernet involve taking ownership) i dont know about 2nd. maybe someone can tell how home edition handled rs3 upgrade on rs2 in past in metered connections. but i doubt that they will use over 3gb data on metered. on regular monthly updates, i also dont know exactly how it handle in metered connections.
I never use Windows 10 without setting metered connection + WU policy to notification that's how i can check for updates on my own and hide the unneeded ones
@ShiningDog @abbodi1406 Is this the settings (from @TairikuOkami) everyone uses? https://forums.mydigitallife.net/th...able-disable-script.62525/page-8#post-1249460
There are actually tons of ways to do it, but most people are either looking for a way to disable windows update service or its tasks, but MS made sure to prevent that as much as possible. I have network services disabled so updates and telemetry simply fails, because there is "no internet", but that is not a very convenient method to use for others, since a lot of software fails too.
Why more experienced members won't give my script a shot is beyond me. It works as advertised without borking the system in any way. All changes are easily reversible. Anyway, all of what you mentioned is under control now using the script, and I'll be keeping watch for any new sneaky files, tasks, and services and I'll immediately kill whatever snake pops up its head. I've succeeded in full control of windows updates whether many people know it or not.
