The reason I prefer a WinPE.WIM (not even so much the ISO) is because I can boot directly from any partition in my PC. No need for a boot disk (Only on rare occasions when I cannot boot into Windows). Then I use EasyBCD to add the boot.wim to the BCD. Addendum: Here is my scenario. I install Windows(10). Install drivers, etc. When all is set up (In my case this takes less than 1 hour since almost all my apps are Portable so I hardly install anything), I boot into WinPE. Create a backup Image of my System using Macrium Reflect -- 15 minutes. (In my experience, the System Images I create with Macrium are the most reliable so far) When I start encountering problems with Windows, instead of repairing (which we all know can be a "headache" sometimes -- takes so much time and effort, plus I feel Windows is going to be "problematic"), I boot into WinPE, Restore the Image I created. In 10 minutes I have a "fixed" Windows again. Then I just Update...
ChrisR's Win10XPE should be the officially recommended PE solution on MDL But then again, sometimes it seems there's nothing more divisive then discussing PE solutions :-( (not here on MDL of course, but on some of the "other" boards).
That's a little bit extreme. There's also Win10PESE. Then there's PEBakery... PEBakery and your ChrisPE - a PEBakery Team release "Different strokes for different folks" That's what's great about Forums... discussions to find solutions. I'm wondering though why there isn't an official thread for Win10XPE since it comes highly recommended
Some tried to maintain PE threads on MDL, but as @Atari800XL mentioned in the past, they never last long, because of lack of interest by MDL members.
Maybe we can try starting a new topic again, specific to ChrisR's Win10XPE? Learning from past experience here, maybe we should try to keep it simple and only mention ready-to-use zip distributions, not focus too much on extra addons, scripts, etc. Leave those to the specialist forums...
Maybe it's because they (like PEBakery) were more for advanced users. And that's why WinPE SE and Win10XPE are popular because it's simple enough, almost anybody can build or learn to build one.
