just for the sake of the argument, what are you doing to keep your machine safe, although it is running some version of windose.. what i do is simple. -i run malwarebytes -i run tdss killer by kaspersky. -i run ccleaner after each internet session. -i run winpatrol to prevent garbage to get into my startup. -i used to run some firewalls, and free antivirus stuff, changing programs every few months, untill i bought a legal windose. [ the first since 3.11.. ] -now using mse, for firewall and av.. result, no infections, for ages.. always open to listen to better ideas,,
Use FF with noscript, chrome with some pop up blocker that blocks java code too. Running MSE. Although windows is technically not legal, i do have a key, just not using it. Its a PITA for reactivation then. Dont install unknown programs and the usual safety measures like checking every USB drive.
I use Chrome with NotScripts and AdBlock. For av I'm using MSE and Comodo for firewall and I'm also using Spybot for spyware. Like you I also run CCleaner pretty often - when I close the browser or when I delete some file. Other than that I try to be carefull with what I download and the sites I visit. I can't really remember the last time I had a virus.
What am I doing to keep my machine safe? I keep my machine safe by not telling others what I do to keep my machine safe; it keeps them guessing!
Common sense-tbh I haven't been using Windows as much ever since I got OS X 10.7.4 totally functional.I know they can get viruses/hacked too
Been there and done that, I used to be obsessed over security when i first got a PC, but at some point you will realize it's all bull. At the end of the day just use your pc for something proper other than scanning to see if it's infected, get a free scanner and have it do its job auto and have the PC auto update both the definitions and Windows update. Unless you are an insane person that just downloads .exe files from questionable sources and runs them, then chances are you won't have a virus problem. Let the programs do their job it's a machine it has to work for you not the other way round.
thanks, mr3dd123, a really usefull list.. there are things on it that i have not used for years.. like comodo, sophos, and things i did not even know.. i`ll have a look for sure.. what you said about McAfee and Norton is so true, that people pay good money to keep them in business is beyond understanding.. i don`t want sound like an anti-ad...
I use NOD32 Antivirus for years now, it's the only software that I actually pay for It warned me many times while surfing, mostly because of evil .js files and such ... I pay for 2 licenses every year, it's something like € 30.-, I use it on 4 machines tho. I have Windows Defender running, simply because it's there I run Spybot S&D once every 2-4 weeks, never had anything to report. Like R29k says, stay away from places you don't need to go.
I just update the MS patches and am careful with what I download and where I surf....at the slightest sign of infection I re-install OS/restore from clean image I also don't keep any personal data on PC so even if it's got a virus, u gotz nuthin on me...I disable internet connection when I am not surfing if PC stays on
Using chrome + adblock, Avira free, not installing toolbars, manually cleaning startup every few months, cleaning junk files(browser cache) every few weeks, cleaning registry once a month. About M$ update - doesn't work because of error 80070002 ( I think due to cracked OS.. )
I use Avast, Mbam, Emsisoft Anti Malware, and CCleaner. If i get in a jam (which is rare) I'll use combofix.
My first line of defense is the SPI firewall in my router running DD-WRT firmware along with this the router is set to use openDNS servers with filtering this way my entire LAN is covered then each PC gets Kaspersky Internet Security installed and I use Opera browser
Latest WU AVG antivir Comodo firewall sitting behind a router with secure settings. (ports..etc...) FF browser, NO WMP!!! Backups of important files on a physically different machine (media server). Only issues I had so far: False positives of some tools I use...
