I don't know what to say, maybe the klite codecs messed up your system. I have used MPC-HC, in any system from Millennium to Win11, in dozen of systems and in more than two decades (considering the original MPC). But I repeat again it's not a vista thing, just learn to use it (not really rocket science) on your PC, then go to setup it on Vista. Learning in front of the "client" (no matter if a real client or a friend or a relative), usually never leads to anything good.
It’s not rocket science, no. But for me rocket science is just as incomprehensible. Anyway, I will try to learn to use it on my Windows XP laptop, before trying again on Vista. another question: is vlc any good in streaming youtube videos? I will try that too on windows xp, if possible.
I assumed your PC was fresher than the one with Vista, not older. When I talked about using MPC-HC on XP I was talking about MPC-HC itself, not about this specific case. You need a recent MPC-HC version to use it together with youtbe downloader simply just pasting a link, and fresh builds aren't working in XP There are other ways obviously, but there are more "rocked science", so I'm not going to detail them. As for vlc I was never in love with it, so nothing that I tested personally (sorry) but there are many ways. Just google for them.
my xp laptop also has a windows 7 partition on which mpc-hc works without any problems (no setup necessary). Maybe I could try to imitate the vista system of my “client” with a virtual installation, but that takes a lot of setup time. I will try vlc first. Maybe it works well enough? anyway, even when mpc-hc did work the first time round, my father really did not understand the principle of copying and pasting a youtube link into the ‘open file’ tab of mpc-hc. If vlc does indeed allow drag and drop, maybe that would be easier for him
There are some extensions that allow to add the option "open with vlc" or open "with mpc-hc" to the browser. Usually they require both a proper extension + an external setup, due the sandbox craze that affects nowadays' browsers, I have not tested them either but could be a solution for the need of your father. P.S. vlc has the video output configuration as well, they just use a different teminology. I think the equivalent of overlay mixer in VLC is "Directx (DirectDraw)" video output. It's easy to test. Given how the overlay mixer works, if you take a screenshot of a playing video, you get a black square instead of the video.
Thank you. I will surely start testing vlc. Edit: first test is not very good. On my windows 7 laptop VLC does play a Youtube video, but it buffers like crazy. Then I can watch for a few seconds, after which there is more buffering… Changing it to Directx (DirectDraw) doesn’t change very much. I will try other outputs later and will try with hardware acceleration off, and so on. And VLC needed another youtube.lua first (instead of the youtube.luac). MPC-HC works much better on my windows 7 laptop. Second edit: when downloaded, the video plays smoothly with mpc-hc. Only when it is watched through streaming, it keeps buffering and plays slowly, with stuttering. Does anyone know why this happens? As far as I know, my father has good fiber optic internet. Downloading the video by completing all the steps necessary is very complicated for my father. He would need a more direct approach: searching for a video, right-clicking (the link) and selecting to play with mpc-hc, which would automatically start the process of downloading the video and playing it afterwards. I’m guessing this would require coding/programming on my part… Third edit: I made an instruction manual pdf for my father to use; a simple one with lots of print screens and arrows pointing at the stuff he needs to click on. Next time I will check if he understands all the steps
277 MB for a browser? I'll be waiting to hear from some of the others here to confirm if it works okay in Windows Vista SP2 64-bit. This is what it looks like after you download and extract the .ZIP file: I assume you double-click the chrome.exe file to load and run it. I've never used a Chronium-based browser before.
The installer of Opera 12 is 12MB in the international version and something like 7MB for the English only one.
Supermium works on windows vista as long as you use the extended kernel & you change the OS spoofer (osver.ini) to windows 7 & higher. Also there is limited functionality like video playback isn't working since it's lacking the codecs, there's no widevine, no google api keys, & etc. The codecs & google api keys will be added in the next update along with 32 bit support. Hopefully the update is next month because the github says updates will be every one to two months. But anyway for the most part it works on windows vista minus the things I mentioned. So it would probably be best to wait till the next the update so it's more usable. Edit: if your willing to trust a browser made in china there's catsxp, I only say that because a lot of people see made in china & are hesitant about it. Truthfully I use it as my main browser & then have supermium installed as a 2nd browser. Anyway it runs & uses the latest chromium a huge benefit is everything works right out of the box including widevine (has to be enabled in the settings) & it has automatic updates. Then like supermium you have to spoof windows vista to windows 7 though but catsxp is on chromium v115 & tries to keep up with googles release schedule. There's a portable version, an online installer, or standalone installer. The online & standalone for some odd reason doesn't make a desktop shortcut on windows vista so you have to find where it's installed to & create the desktop shortcut yourself. But catsxp & supermium are the only updated versions of chromium that work on windows vista as long as you have the extended kernel installed but I am hopping supermium get's all the bells & whistles catsxp has. I mean if catsxp has widevine, working codecs, & etc. I don't see why supermium can't lol. Oh one last thing supermium is made by the windows vista extended kernel creator if anyone was wondering. Edit 2: There is supposedly yandex as mentioned previously in other pages but never tried it on windows vista or even windows 7 & 8 (8.1). Only tried catsxp & supermium on windows vista, 7, & 8 (8.1)
Supermium (based on Chromium 119) now runs on Windows Vista without the need for any extended kernel.
Thanks for making us aware of that. I downloaded the .zip file for the current 64-bit version (119.0.6045.192). I'll determine in the near future if it works with Windows Vista Business SP2 64-bit.
Hi, I can help. On the Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile V6545 laptop, I have installed Windows Vista Business 64bit OEM/Server 2008 R1 without Extended Kernell using Bypassesu-V7, the latest update December 2023. After finding out that the Supermium version version 119.0.6045.192 will run on my Vista, I installed its 64bit version. I use it for about a week, and except for a few graphical irrelevant shortcomings running O.K .. You can use current Add-ons from the Chrome Web Store, I was surprised by the increase in the speed of the Internet (I have Internet 500/50), via the web speedtest.net I measured a speed of about 510Mb/s down, 48Mb/s up. It was surprised because under Windows 7 ULT, 8.1Pro, 10PRO, 11PRO, all 64bit, I have a Firefox 115 ESR/120 on Firefox Downoad speed only around 240Mb/s.
Thanks for your comments and advice. I fire up and use Windows Vista SP2 64-bit once a month for testing purposes and to keep it updated. Supermium will get very little use, but as long as it can load the web sites that I use, that's the main thing. I'm not a fan of add-ons, so I rarely install them.
I´ve had no trouble using r3dfox, Supermium, SeaMonkey, Waterfox, Falkon and Otter in 7 & 8.1. The first 3 and Otter work in Vista as do New Moon and Serpent 52. Floorp and Mullvad still work in 7 & 8 but as with Tor Browser cannot be updated after the current versions as their developers are following Mozilla and restricting their usability to Windows 10 +. Incidentally, Opera 12 still works in XP, Vista, 7, 8.1 and 10. Haven´t tried it in 11.
