When disabling Auto-Update, it automatically hides Update from Settings (which is fine with me). When restoring Automatic Updates, the button for "hide WU settings page" is still checked. ^^ Was reported to me twice, although I didn't get to a Win10 computer to confirm. Thanks for this great tool!
Also a big THANK YOU from here for a truly incredible tool to tame the Windows update process. Downloaded the latest version (0.8) and have it running on Windows 10 1809 (installed before I could catch it, and this is what sent me looking for a solution) and luckily the "upgrade, really?" didn't cause any data loss or other issues (at least that I'm aware of to date). Quick question, I have Windows Updates turned off and that seems to be working just fine. Does this setting also stop WD definitions from being installed? Just curious. Again, thanks for a tool that even a non-tech (and "seasoned" citizen) seems to have been able to deploy and use.
Hi, it's a bit confusing, so I'd like to ask: The Github version 0.8 includes all changes, including those made in 0.8d and 0.8e, correct? Those builds were never mentioned explicitly on Github.
Yes it includes all changes i was a bit lazy with maintianing the changelog for the last few minor fixes @Homer712 Window Defender should keep itself up to date but to be sure you can set up a individual tisate task for WS from the tools menu in the apps system menu (top left cornet where the icon is).
Just a follow up to that task that can be set up via the tools menu for Windows Defender to keep itself up to date without having to do the definitions (I sometime see five a day) via Update Manager . . . does this need to be redone upon a version update to Update Manager, or once done, will it stick?
Once done the task is there and will stay there until its removed (that can also be done from the scheduled task windows management console).
Seem to have run into an issue. Prior to installing latest updates I had this: Windows Updates (1) Installed Updates (3) Hidden Updates (0) Update History (74) After the last update that I did via Windows Update Manager (WD definitions & Silverlight)I ended up with this: Windows Updates (0) Installed Updates (0) Hidden Updates (0) Update History (76) A refresh changed nothing, and a restart did nothing. Any thoughts?
Maybe Windows Automatic Maintenance did run a Windows Update Cleanup and that caused it. Other possibility: Some automatic Windows Fix (like WaaS Medic) did detect a WU error and reset the WU components. WaaS Medic is one of the Update Facilitators you can block in WuMgr.
Carlos, thanks for responding. The last update that I installed via WUM prior to seeing this issue was a Silverlight (KB4203307) update that showed up in WUM and was dated way back to June 13th, 2017. I use Macrium Reflect on a regular basis (weekly full/daily differential) so I was able to just revert to that morning's image and I'm back to where I was prior to doing the update. I have since just hidden the Sliverlight update with WUM. Haven't needed it for well over a year so I don't think I'll miss it. But back to your response. Looked around and could not find any settings and/or check boxes in WUM that referred to WaaS Medic. Could you point me in the right direction?
Thanks, I found "Disable Update Facilitators" right under "Disable Automatic Update" and the box is in fact checked. So I'll just leave that alone as is.
Unfortunate no, wuauserv is the component that does the checking, but what you can do is block it's access to the internet using a firewall. And than use WuMgr's ability to do offline update checks, it just costs your 300MB data volume form time to time used to download the most recent update catalog from M$. Cheers David X.
Error message I got when trying to uninstall an update on Server 2008 SP2 (NT 6.0): followed by Failed to remove error. Exit 87. Possibly an option you use does NOT exist on Server 2008 WUSA. Edit: Lol, WUMT gets the same error. Obviously WUSA does not support the "/uninstall" parameter in Server 2008. No idea if pkgmgr works.
i just hate this service being enabled, it's causing high cpu usage and slow down the whole system for no reason, it's the same for almost all microsoft services that are auto enabled with the start of windows such as wsearch superfetch bits, i just like them all disabled, this way my pc works normal and fresh so this 300mb file is just one time download and i can keep it backed up everytime i need offline check or is it updated every while thanks
The WSUS catalog (wsusscn2.cab) is over 400MiB now. It is updated regularly (at least one time a month). But the WUA (Windows Update Agent) is required for checking. That means the wuauserv must be running, at least temporarily. Also note that the WSUS catalog does not contain all updates.
this way i think that i'd go with the default checking process, i don't see any benefit of the offline mode, if i need to update an offline machine i will simply download all updates and move them using a flash drive and install them directly, in all cases i have to download that wsus catalog, so better waste the bandwith data in actual updates
