That's true. Win7 has had many years to sort out all driver issues and software compatibility issues.
Believe it or not, even the mighty win7 had these weird glitchy issues with support when it first came out, but it wasn't win7's fault. It was the compatibility side of the equation.

I will test it out when a proper ATI radeon driver is released!

Yeah true even for us when the system has crash due to overclocking reasons :D I have had to start again on the whole system due to the files being corrupted and what not tried to do a system restore and guess what nothing there what so ever and it's become very stressful indeed installing around 150GB of software so now i will wait it out to all the bugs have been sorted out so a time frame of about 6 months is a good idea for us ...

So far after getting my system back and up running on Windows 7 have nothing to complain about now ..

There will be distros, surely. However, one of the strongest thing about linux is that there will always be a fork that does not. Just remember the Gnome 3 fiasco. People hated it, most still do, and there is Cinnamon, there is Mate, there is LXDE, there is XFCE, all to replace the thing that has gone wrong. If only it was possible with win8 as well.

If you used the word inevitable, there is something to add to it. The #1 thing stopping linux from being #1 OS right now is gaming, at least on home computers. If Valve and the Steambox will be successful, if game publishers start releasing their stuff for linux, the windows market share will go down even more. If it happens at the same time when business customers realize they can't live using mobile phones instead of computers, the death of MS will be inevitable as well.

    2 things can stop this:
    1. If the linux gaming market fails.
    3. If win8 and its successors are made so much better that they can be a real competition. Let's face it, what keeps win8 alive right now is the desktop support. Something that won't be around forever.

One of the reasons we complain so much is to make #2 come true. We are windows users. We want it to survive, but in a usable form of course.

If they get all CLOUDY I may resort to trying Linux as well. I don't mind win8 right now because the cloud stuff is mostly optional.
If they start forcing the issue, a lot of people that actually value their privacy may have a backlash and jump ship to try Linux or other systems.
I just hope Linux will be ready when that happens, because if they're not, the CLOUDies will win by default.

I'm kind-of glad that online gaming cloud thing failed. I forget what it was called, but it was like an android app where you could play a bunch of different games for a subscription.
I feel like this is what they're trying to do with Windows as evident in the Office365 attempt.

Windows 8 is great once you tweak it to suite you. Much better and faster than Windows 7. Would not change back to windows 7.

At present, I find Windows 8.1 slower to boot than Windows 8(and this is on a high end system). Windows 8.1 will probably be OK once we are able to tweak all it features, and be able to disable features we individually do not like.

Win8 is a every bit as good as Win7 (as long as you use a 3rd party Start menu). I have 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2000, & 98se all set up on different machines and I dabble with them all, so I doubt I'll be accused of being a "fanboy" of either.

Bottom line is use what you enjoy and don't stress over someone else's choice, or opinion.

On a totally OT note, I am a "Tea Party Redneck". Don't listen to the rhetoric, either right or left. Educate yourself brother (or sister)

That would be nice if support cycles were infinite. Unfortunately they aren't. 9x and 2000 are already dead. XP will follow them in less than a year. Then Vista, then 7 will come to their end as well. Then we'll have no other choice but 8 and its successors. Or linux of course.

And don't think it's about security updates only. Try installing 9x on a modern computer. It won't even see the SATA HDD, there will be no video drivers etc. I don't think it's far off to assume that the same thing will happen to 7 in a few years. Some software isn't even compatible with Vista these days. And it's still officially supported...

Agreed. I, for one, am going to boycott any cloud OS. I can handle the stupid modern ui since you don't have to use it, but forcing people to use a cloud is just BS.
I'll use the stupid linux system if I have to for as long as I can until there's no more choice but cloud.

Agreed. It was not my intent to suggest anyone should return to any outdated, unsupported OS. Times, and operating systems, change, whether we like it or not. One can adapt. I enjoy "playing around" with the old systems but my work is done in either 7 or 8.

No offense intended but I just think this "my OS is better than your OS" banter is kind of silly.

I Like 8.1 a lot. I even don't need ClassicShell anymore while 8 was "incomplete" without it.

I triple boot now Win 7, 8, 8.1. Will replace Win 8 with 8.1 later on. As a computer consultant need to know how stuff works. Have been a tester for MS since version 1.0, but I guess that's what you are all. Today a customer is a live paying testing platform for everything. Now I only wish there could be a KSM emulator for cars :)

So to stay with 8.1 is just a natural choice for me. I customize it to my liking and therefore it's fine with me. I also need Win 7 on my Laptop as 'certain' programs are not working on Win 8.

I run 2 desktop putters, one is a windows 7 ultimate the other is windows 8.1/Wmc . with some adjustments I go straight to the desktop with no sign in or metro stuff I have my icons on the win 8 puter other then a start button you cant see any difference windows 8 seems a little faster I play some older games on it (halflife 2 and bioshock 1 and 2 some slot machine games) all run good so im happy with it !! I will leave win 7 on the other system until it dies or whatever. my win 8 system also is overclocked and water cooled and runs great so im very happy with it :)

I have to say first. I am a Linux geek. :drink:

I read a lot bad things about Windows 8 over the internet

That is confusing interface, disaster , ugly touch style, crap, dual idiotic interface...

For me this is cheapest ($39.99), most painless upgrade (Family Pack)

    Cheaper, faster, legal .

    p.s.

probably not worth a penny over 40 bucks

Is it mandatory for 8 users to update to 8.1?
