Does the same motherboard work ok with Operton 280\290s? Maybe i could buy them on ebay and just replace.. And hopefully dual core would speed it up too... Hope they aren't expensive.
My BIOS'es that are listed in the first post have been tested. The only ones to have problems were the HDAMA-G + (Opteron 250 E4 OSA, Opteron 280 E6 OSP). FWIW I got a pair of Opteron 280 E6 OSA for $40 once from eBay.
I apologise, I have the Opteron 280's instead of 290's. I bought the 8gb Ram, 500gb one and the guy took out the 2.4ghz 250's to swap with the 280's for £15. cost me £255 altogether. And now to answer your questions... 1. I am looking to buy 3 more of the same 500gb seagate disks so i will end up 'RAIDing' in the future. 2. I have no idea what PowerNow is but it sounds cool and useful so i suppose i will need it I have no idea how to get the infomation you require so how to may have to be required And for flashing the bios, I need a real easy guide as the whole things confuzzles me loads so please step by step!! Thanks very much everyone, Josh.
Josh - Please read my first post. As for PowerNow, it is AMD's equivalent of Intel's SpeedStep...the CPU frequency and voltage are scaled up & down based upon CPU usage. It saves energy = money. As for the BIOS flashing, perhaps I should also make sure that you've got an HDAMA-G and not the HDAMA-I. Simply what is your current BIOS version? It should be something like 1.xx or 2.xx. Josh & mateuszd - The problematic Opteron 280's were the OSP280FAA6CB variant...not the retail OSA280FAA6CB ones. Look closely at the model numbers on the CPU's.
How am I supposed to check the CPU without taking off the fan (I really don't want to do that) and how do I check the BIOS. Please can you also explain how to flash bios. I think it is a Rev.G board though. It doesn't have SATA but I have a seperate RAID card. I have also borrowed a usb cd for the night and I have a USB stick. Regards, Josh EDIT:: My bios is 2.17
Ok, you definitely have an HDAMA-G then. The latest BIOS is this beta v2.18 BIOS that has an ACPI fix for Windows 7/Vista/Server2008[R2]. Please burn the bootable CD ISO image for BIOS v2.18 that I have on the first page with an application like ImgBurn, Roxio, Nero, etc...that's the easiest way. I'm not sure if the BIOS has support to boot a USB CD/DVD drive though. If not, then you'll have to find the HP USB Storage Format tool and make a bootable DOS USB stick (be prepared to wipe it clean). Then drop on a copy of the phlash16.exe along with the BIOS file. Boot to the stick and then run the command to flash the BIOS. If you don't want to take the heatsinks off, we can probably deduce the model number (OSA, OSP, etc) by looking at the voltage of the CPU cores. Once you get Windows installed, install CPU-Z and post the CPU voltages. The CPU voltage should be around 1.25V, 1.35V, or 1.4V. If you get something totally off, please try CPU-Z v1.54 since that's what works with my similar Arima HDAMB board.
please can you give me a link to the bootable cd iso as there are all .zip files. would i just pop the cd in and it does it automatically? by the way usb cd does come up. i am usually ok when it comes to tech stuff but hardware confuses me and this is going over my head As always, Josh EDIT:: the file is a .rom and ultraiso is refusing to open... trying imgburn now EDIT 2:: i now class myself as a complete douche. i didnt read down so now i am just burning it then i presume i pop it in and follow instructrions. EDIT 3:: another thought, my hard drive came preinstalled with freedos, if i load a memory stick into the machine can i use freedos to run the .exe?
ok, not enough power was drawn to use the usb-dvd so i plugged in a ide dvd that i pulled from an old pc, i tried to do a:>phflash16.exe (or whatever it is) then i got an error boot.wph was not found or something so i ran f_dsdt.bat then it came up with something and now when i boot the bios says 2.18 rf4 or something. but when i try to put a install DVD (cd works) into the dvd it doesnt. i really don't want to use a usb stick as they are painstakingly slow. So is that me done now? All set up for Server2008r2 or SBS11? Thanks, Josh
Dude, you need to read the directions. I told you not to flash the DSDT one because that one has PowerNow tables for the Opteron 250 E4 model. Redo and run the F_SIL55 batch script. That should allow you to install Windows Vista/7/Server2008[R2]. Of course if you're looking to do the OEM SLP activation, you'll need to hack the BIOS yourself using AndyP's PhoenixTool and a valid RW-Everything ACPI report file. As for your boot issue, you need to go into the BIOS and set the DVD drive as the first boot device before your hard drive or RAID card(s).
I don't need to do anything else as far as the activation is concerned as I have a legal copy (dreamspark) and I had ready set the DVD drive to the top. I put any DVD in and it doesnt pick it up.
yep just keeps blinking and thats on both drives (the ide and usb) and I know for a fact the usb one works fine and I am just downloading fedora. Josh EDIT:: just put in a server 2003 disc and that works fine... im proper confused
Ok, I put another IDE drive in and now I have got to the install screen, just that there are no SATA drives detected. What is the driver I would use?
You already said that you don't have the on-board SATA. You need to get the drivers for your RAID card. Also if your RAID card has a BIOS, you must configure your drive(s) appropriately before they will get detected by the Windows installer.
My hard drive is detected upon boot and in the Silicon Image RAID utility, but I can't seem to find out what are the drivers and what the SATA/RAID card actually is. I am just gonna send an email to CharlesComputers now.
Sorry for all the posts, but i have deduced that I have a SiL 3112 pci to 2 port sata. i have tried downloading the drivers from the website to load on the server 2008r2 setup but it is still not seeing the drives. EDIT: ok guys, i've had a breakthrough. downloaded the windows 7 drivers for the SiL 3112a off of their website, loaded it up and BAM it works. now i only get a 0x80070057 error. back to the drawing board...
Hi TQH. Just to let you know I got a freeze yesterday few minutes after finishing imaging a 55GB Windows 7 installation over the network to a HDD that was connected to the SATA hard disk and adding it to Windows Deployment Services... I'm not sure what to do, it looks like another evidence that it's the SATA controller being the one to be blamed. I don't want to buy processors to find out they don't help. Could it be the driver's fault? I think the one I am using is made by playing with inf files. Maybe that's the reason? Can you give me the link to the sata controller driver if you have one? Thanks...
