shutdown problem Hi sastiger I too have one of these system which i got of ebay last week and have the same problem but not as bad only does that when i first turn it on once. After you turn it back on its OK The first day that i got is shutting a lot until I re-thermal paste the chips now is only does it once when you turn it on Apart from that its not a bad machine i have installed the 2.18 bios and it run well apart from two small problems loud fans noise & shutdown problem Thanks Hitman936
Hey Hitman, Thanks for getting back to me, for the record which CPU thermal paste did you use?...I am also able to actually move the whole heatsink with little force...this is obviously bad, but which paste do I need?... How do I flash my bios and how do I know which one I have? Thanks, sastiger
Heat Transfer Compound Hi sastiger I got some of this from maplin a few years ago and it does the job Heat Transfer Compound you can still get it from maplin 2ml =£2.99 Also yesterday I under clocked the CPU in the Bios by 200mhz and the machine has not shutdown on start-up at all today so you may also want to give that a try as well applying the paste Thanks hitman936
To flash your bios is quite easy first make a boot floppy with xp put your floppy in to your floppy drive go in to my computer double click on floppy and format as a boot disk Go to page 8 of this thread and download the BIOS218B.zip bios from the link From the BIOS218B.zip file, put the following 3 files onto the DOS the floppy boot disk that you made (218B.RF4, phlash16.exe, update.bat). then set the bios to boot from floppy then type update.bat and now you will flashing your bios if you go to page 25 on this thread you can download a iso with all the bios on it and will auto boot up to a prompt with the following BIOS'es: F_ORIG.BAT = v2.18 original F_SIL54.BAT = v2.18 with update Silicon Image SIL3114 v5.4.0.3 F_SIL55.BAT = v2.18 with update Silicon Image SIL3114 v5.5.0.0 F_DSDT.BAT = v2.18 with update Silicon Image SIL3114 v5.5.0.0 and ACPI DSDT modded with performance states for the Opteron 250 E4-stepping (OSA250FAA5BL) all you should have to do is to type in the that bios you want ie F_SIL55.BAT and hit the enter key dont for get to flash first with the 2.18 original I have flashes mine with 2.18 original only because i do not need to install any windows format I am running Freenas on this machine Thanks Hitman936
Hi Hitman936, Just a thought - I traced the 'turns off once after turning on' annoyance on my HDAMA-G board - it was the BIOS. It seems to listen after a full power-down (AKA remove plug from socket) and changes whatever state the soft power is after about 30 seconds - so the solution is Don't press the soft power switch! the machine will power up all by itself after 30 seconds or so after you plug it in. This doesn't happen if you don't interupt the power supply (so you only use the soft power switch on the MBoard - not the power supply). Cheers Scottrock
Cool & Quite Fuction Hi All, Does any one know how to get the cool and quite fuction to work in ver G bios i have 2x280 dual cores the models of the chips are OSP280FAA6CB I have flashed the machine with F_SIL55.BAT = v2.18 with update Silicon Image SIL3114 v5.5.0.0 but no cool&quite fuction there i am using freenas in the system log i get kernel: powernow0: <Cool`n'Quiet K8> on cpu0 kernel: device_attach: powernow0 attach returned 6 kernel: cpu1: <ACPI CPU> on acpi0 kernel: powernow1: <Cool`n'Quiet K8> on cpu1 kernel: device_attach: powernow1 attach returned 6 kernel: cpu2: <ACPI CPU> on acpi0 kernel: powernow2: <Cool`n'Quiet K8> on cpu2 kernel: device_attach: powernow2 attach returned 6 kernel: cpu3: <ACPI CPU> on acpi0 kernel: powernow3: <Cool`n'Quiet K8> on cpu3 kernel: device_attach: powernow3 attach returned 6 These 280 chips support powernow and cool&quite THANKS Hitman936
Hi tqhoang Thanks for getting back to me The bios that i am using is one of yours it is the F_SIL55.BAT = v2.18 with update Silicon Image SIL3114 v5.5.0.0 With Out ACPI DSDT modded. It the iso that you have posted on page 25 of this Thread. I have all so checked to see if freenas support ACPI DSDT PSS And the freebsd site the base that freenas was built on it seem that ACPI DSDT PSS is supported freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=acpi&sektion=4&manpath=FreeBSD+7.2-RELEASE My dmesg powernow-k8 output is ACPI: SSDT bff71a42 003F4 (v01 PTLTD POWERNOW 06040000 LTP 00000001) powernow-k8: Found 1 Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 280 processors (4 cpu cores) (version 2.20.00) powernow-k8: 0 : fid 0x10 (2400 MHz), vid 0xc powernow-k8: 1 : fid 0xe (2200 MHz), vid 0xe powernow-k8: 2 : fid 0xc (2000 MHz), vid 0x10 powernow-k8: 3 : fid 0xa (1800 MHz), vid 0x10 powernow-k8: 4 : fid 0x2 (1000 MHz), vid 0x12 powernow-k8: 0 : fid 0x10 (2400 MHz), vid 0xc powernow-k8: 1 : fid 0xe (2200 MHz), vid 0xe powernow-k8: 2 : fid 0xc (2000 MHz), vid 0x10 powernow-k8: 3 : fid 0xa (1800 MHz), vid 0x10 powernow-k8: 4 : fid 0x2 (1000 MHz), vid 0x12 Thanks Hitman936
Hitman936 - Please give this BIOS a try and let me know if it's stable. Unfortunately AMD doesn't have the OSP models in the thermal data sheet, so I took a swag at the TDP for each p-state using a mix from the Opteron OSK270 and the OSA280. LINK DELETED BECAUSE OF LOCKUPS
Hi tqhoang I have flashed the machine with the bios that you posted and have been testing it for about 2 hours with difference settings but unfortunatley it a bit unstable the system lockup a lot but the cpu scaling work well and the cpu tmp went down to cpu1 45 & cpu2 50 This is very good work unfortunatley will have to flash back to the last bios due to the amount of lock up that i am getting Thanks Hinman936
Sorry to hear that. Did the Linux LiveCD lockup on you too? I have the feeling that one or more of the voltages is incorrect.
Hi tqhoang Did not try the linux livecd i will reflash again with that bios and try the livecd and let you know can i try a different linux live cd like ubuntu or mint with the command to see if i get volt setting diffrent from that of Fedora. Once again many thanks for you work andfor taking the time to help Thanks Hitman936
Hi tqhoang I Have tried it again and got the same problem with lock-up and can also confirm that fedora locked up every time I login after 3 minutes with this bios installed Thanks Hitman936
Oh no, I meant to use my original BIOS that gets flashed with the F_SIL55.BAT and any recent Linux LiveCD. I want to know if the Linux kernel's ACPI DSDT override is stable...since the voltages that I used for each p-state are the same.
Hi tqhoang When i tested fedora with your F_SIL55.BAT = v2.18 with update Silicon bios fedora did not lockup I am retesting ERON280OSP bios mod again in freenas i have done a clean install of freenas and the system has not lockup yet CPU frequency is showing as 2400MHz the CPU frequency is not scaling up or down and the CPU1 & CPU2 temp are 55 & 61 the same as with the F_SIL55.BAT = v2.18 bios but soon as i flach with the ERON280OSP bios activate the system power control ulitily in freenas the CPU temp go down to 45 & 50 and CPU frequency start scaling from 100 to 2400 MHz and then the system start locking up Thanks Hitman936
Ok, for now just go back to the BIOS from the F_SIL55.BAT. I'll have to see if the acpidump utility will dump the kernel's override or if it just dumps the original one from the BIOS.
Hi tqhoang i have just finished testing manage to get it a bit more stable with ERON280OSP bios and have activate the system power control utility the CPU1 & CPU2 temps are now 39 & 45 but i am having some problem the hard-drives unmount them self and keep losing the network connection so i will put the bios back to F_SIL55.BAT Once again many thanks Hitman936
Hi tqhoang this seems to be a lot more stable but freenas still has a problem with it locking up i am now trying the bios with ubuntu server if no problems then i will use ubuntu server and get rid of freenas will update you later when i have installed and setup the ubuntu server once again many Thanks Hitman936
