Well I read it was because traditionally they are more family orientated in that more younger people live with their parents so the older parents can't really isolate themselves.

What if it is only due to less testing?

Let's assume Italy and Spain are not different than the 'rest'..

Everybody becomes a part of a statistic when died due to corona. BUT not everybody can be tested.
Let's 'apply' the common value that says 91% of all corona infections are mild or moderate....and Italy has concentrated on the remaining 9%.

This would mean Italy has a very high level of endemic infection...and the situation will last a long time.
This btw. is conform to Prof. Streeck's assumptions.
    https://www.unsertirol24.com/2020/0...ona-infizierten-in-italien-wesentlich-hoeher/

The discrepancy of 91% of all infections are seemingly mild or moderate only and the high mortality rate in Italy and Spain can mean an extremely high number of unknown infections.

Another speculation about the high level of infections in northern italy is because there is a very large population of chinese people, most are working in the fashion industry and many went back home at chinese newyear, combined with a soccer match (atalanta bergamo vs valencia) with 45000 italian and spanish spectators mingling with each other, which can be a good source for the spanish infections going wild in a very short time.

In the netherlands, the first infections were in a region that celebrated carnaval, the first dutch infected man got it, most likely in northern italy when on vacation.

According to the NIH, they state (as of 3-17-20) it can survive on plastic and stainless for up to 2 to 3 days
    https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/new-coronavirus-stable-hours-surfaces

There are so many discrepancies in these reports that there is no way to know anything positively yet.
Yen, your link to the nejm refers to the half-life of this virus. The NIH also states that this SARS 2 does live longer than the first SARS virus did.... they don't know why. You would think that China would be offering up more data than anybody else seeing as they have had more experience with it, as far as I have heard from the media for scientific reports from China.... crickets chirping

One thing I strongly disagree with is this big push by local governments and the media to encourage people to order take-out food, with catch phrases like "Support you local businesses", "No contact delivery", and so on. My question is, who exactly is vouching for the health of the people preparing your food? The business owner? The local government? The media? Or more realistically, none of the above? I say "No thank you", in my opinion it's like playing Russian roulette with your health.

The discrepancies are due to different definitions and the fact that lab conditions are different to real conditions.
You have to exactly reproduce the same conditions and use the same model to get reproducible results in a lab.
Also the virus concentration used in labs is far higher, the droplets are different and vaporisation rate excluded compared to real conditions.

The nejm link does not only refer to the half-life it also refers to the tissue-culture infectious dose [TCID50].
TCID50 signifies the concentration at which 50% of the cells are infected when a test tube or well plate upon which cells have been cultured is inoculated with a diluted solution of viral fluid.

This is not comparable to would infect a human / or not anymore, it's a different (actually artificial) size.

Current results gathered in real houses of COVID19 positive people are more informative.
I have watched a question / answer convo of a virologist and interested people.

-disinfection of surfaces in your house is not necessary. COVID19 has a lipid shell. Any tensid (soap) detergent is sufficient. Washing hands with soap at least 20 seconds is sufficient. Disinfection agent should be there for the pros (medical personal)....
    -infection via food is unlikely
-survival on surfaces to be virulent is less than 8 hours
-infection via money (coins etc) is unlikely
-lives longest where the aerosol can keep its wetness most
-no active ('alive') virus found in houses (on surfaces) of COVID19 positive persons which have been in quarantine. (Virus DNA = dead virus has been found of course)
'alive' means here virus that could be still propagated in lab

The high virulence of SARS2 is not reasoned by the (longer) survival time on surfaces, it is rather reasoned by the fact that it also resides in the throat and sneezing / coughing has a high load.

BTW I would not trust Chinese sources and statistics. Consider the history of COVID19 and Li Wenliang.

we need one good drug to restart the economic back
if will try to rush things it will rise despair in many areas like health system

we need more social responsibility to avoid this
so overall im pessimistic because the economic toll on anyone is making harder or for religion reason
same bridge will leak and break first
    and rest will follow

We need to start preparing for something worse than COVID 19. The death tolls are small in comparison to what they could be,
had nature thrown something really nasty at us.

Us New Yorkers know this, because we're watching people get sick faster than the system can handle them.
Not only are we afraid for ourselves, but our own elderly relatives are at a greater risk than the rest of us.

I had to leave Brooklyn about 8 months back. I moved to Long Island to take care of my mum.
My decision saved my life. COVID is strong in the 5 boroughs.

I have a heart condition now. I rarely go outside. Although I have adequate health care, I can't go to the hospital because
it would be a one way trip for me. I might bring COVID 19 home and kill everybody in my house.

This is more than an inconvience for me. It's about knowing what one mistake can bring,
but also having to suffer through each day, not being able to breathe or walk up and down 5 stairs.

I know that others have it worse than I do. My heart goes out to them. Never in my life have I felt
such pain and hopelessness. Watching others lose their own precious lives.

I cry a lot these days. But I know that I must be strong. If for no other reason than to give
    strength to others.

I couldn't even comment on this post because it makes no sense at all.

    However, I'll try. ;)

Are you sure? Because my "illness" could come from one of many possible sources. Heredity can play into it
(I do have heart disease in my family line.) It could be my diet. (This was taught to me from a young age)

I don't drink beer, although beer drinking is looking pretty good right now.
If only I could have more than 1.5 litres of fluid...perhaps I could trade some coffee for beer.

NAHHHHHHH. I love my coffee as much as beer drinkers love their beer.

"Because I only love my beloved, and those around me are a virus???"

Can you elaborate as to what you mean by this statement?

At this point, I give up. And I usually have something snyde to say.

I'll defer to our Japanese brothers and sisters.

Can any of you tell me if any part of that drivel is a Haiku?

Actually from what I got from this stimulus thing was, each adult gets $1,200 and you get $500. for the kids. So a family of four (two adults + two kids) would get $3,400. That should get some by for a month if they conserve their finances, like cut the cell phone for the kids and cable tv, reduce the tp quantities stashed. Of course this depends on where you live too. If your in an upper scale Manhattan apt them probably not but if your out in the boonies in Nebraska then it's plenty.... you could actually afford a new house and have enough left over to take the wheels off too!

I went out today to the grocery store got TP and some spam and frozen chicken breasts for the dogs and some cat food during senior hours there were no crowds , also got some cookies and milk there was plenty of beer and booze but I didn't need any. got some fresh fruit and a few odds and ends . the TP hoarders must of had enough because there was plenty on the shelves of course there was a limit sign on it but all in all we were in and out in 30 minutes. it looked like there were more pickers for home delivery filling carts I guess that thins out the herd in the store LOL. so if you plan it right going to the store isn't so bad we go at 6:00 AM if you go at 3PM there are crowds !

    uh..... move to Nebraska?
I'm sorry but there's no options left, we are lucky we are getting the $1,200 to start with, I think if O'Bummer was in office today we would not be getting anything at all. Some places a deferring payments. Personally my bank told me that they would defer my car payments (but they still get their interest $$). I do not have to do that yet. If we need to blame somebody then blame some China man for eating strange critters and not washing his hands. I'm not working either, in fact I just got off the phone talking with HR about getting my paid time off. They want to help me collect unemployment but we are all screwed and in the same boat here
