Thank you so much! I'd just about given up but the links you provided have brought my Vostro 1520 back to life!!

I originally bricked it trying to install the A08 BIOS from within Windows, but now it's running A08 fine. I tried several times with a generic USB with no luck, but it worked when I used a SanDisk USB in the left USB port (the one nearest the back), by using the SHIFT key and holding it down when powering on. After a couple of minutes it suddenly re-booted a couple of times, I removed the USB and now I'm looking at the Windows login screen.
