Well the support for the proprietary driver is now being worked on, maybe you should submit your issue to AMD. The only supported mode for now is the software mode.

I was under the impression that basically anything that isn't GCN (high-end 7000-series and higher that isn't a re-brand) would be much better suited towards the open-source graphics driver. A HD5850 should handle almost flawlessly with the open-source graphics driver, but I'm not entirely sure what might be going on under Linux Mint (I can vouch for the open-source stack under openSUSE TW, Fedora, and Ubuntu being ok).

seriously? nobody? -- AMD / Microsoft Partnerships long time for Xbox and Directx, some of there virtual stuff too --- I want some flying helicopters , some real life conspiracy theory's, thou it does sorta piss me off that i upgraded my laptop without knowing all this, went on vacation only to find out Peppermint 7 did not support AMD cause of the flying helicopters -- think ill just go back to Peppermint 6

just always funny when something does not work and a couple fingers can be pointed somewhere in Microsofts direction :)

@Tiger-1: Mint is a nice distro. I found it very easy to install and use.

Best of luck with it. :)

@sentinal: How long have you been running Linux Mint?

    And welcome to MDL :welcome:

I agree, it appears multiple errors during updates, broken links, especially if it is not the latest version.

I am looking to test the Manjaro. I have used Fedora found it very good and stable.

the more they add bells and whistles, and then try to add whistles ontop of whistles when there should of been bells .. well, ya get the idea, full of bugs. though I do have to hand it to all the distro's and kernel makers, to install windows we need this driver and that driver, maybe even that other driver to make things work, whereas for the most part MINT, Manjaro, Debian, ect they just roll right off the built in drivers from the kernel, something windows itself prolly could not do without 2,867 security patches.

that beeing said, there are ways to fix the "GENERIC" kernels built inside of MINT, by patching your own kernels conformermed to your own Hardware -- I'm too scared to do all that, atleast right now with so much programming and playing around, so i choose the "NO WHISTLES" version

its not puppy, seems to run VMware wich is a must for me, and this is PEPPERMINT ----

REMEMBER 16.04 and AMD full of bugs, forget it, lack of driver support, roll back to the 14.04 (unless they fixxed this in past month or so) --- I had to roll back to the Peppermint 6 for my AMD laptop, otherwise Peppermint 7 should be something looking into

Which Mint Mate? I have not experienced any problems in Cinnamon 18 thus far.

    What bugs?

Have not had an issue with updates installing... only repo's that have not been updated - just use the default ones - they seem to be better maintained - select "don't switch to a local mirror" in update preferences.

You need to know what you are doing if you want to change standard kernels - the out-of box kernels are good enough - covers a wide range of drivers ... having said that why is Mint still pushing 4.4...?
Has anyone got 4.8 working on Sarah?

Agreed... Gave up on Mate a long time ago...

Either way I think it also depends on the used kernel....I could fix issues installing another one...

I am using default kernal with default updates. Installing another one will only create more problems am sure.

I got my issues resolved using another kernel 4.2.0-36. I thought I can revert if not..no big thing. :)

OK the good news is that kernel 4.8.3 works fine.... the bad news is Banshee is still messed up... (closes after playing current tune, no repeat etc)

    @90
Firefox is a hog at startup but doesn't bother me too much... as for the other issues... I'm with Yen, re upgrading the kernel, just make sure you do it correctly and use GrubCustomizer to keep the older ones in case you need to fallback...

I did it via mint's default updater at the kernel section the old one that came with the package (original ISO) is still installed and available for a reversion. I am still running mint cinnamon 64 bit 17.3, though.

As a late adopter.. still dunno if Mint 18/Cinnamon 3 really brings anything substantial to the party... TBH (some good vibes about Yakkety tho;...) if Cinnamon ran well on that I might switch ,,,

My mint updater is showing kernal 4.4.0-45.66 available upgrade. No other version available there. Should I install that kernal using mint updater and it fix my bugs?
