Ugh, can we create a new thread on this subject ? This thread was originally about attempting to HACK/patch Windows Media Center 10 and someone changed to Possible alternatives. SO now it's pages of why XX product is better than WMC instead of getting to details on how to do the tech side of hacking WMC into 10. It's gotten so bad on this thread, we start talking about it that it goes so far off topic that it's pointless. I have started looking for another thread on some other sites because of this, I want this to happen, find people that could help as a community project but, this thread is shot now... I'll post back when I find a new thread, There is not enough volume over at TGB.tv and no interest at XDA, so not sure where to go from here.. It's sad we had some good ideas here too, they just needed to follow up instead of going so far off topic
You are absolutely correct, and that is disregarding the fact that there are absolutely no viable alternatives to WMC. We need to get back on topic, and find a way to install WMC on Windows 10. Every time there is a new comment here, I am hoping for a solution, not someone talking about an alternate piece of software. I have tried most all of them, and ended up uninstalling them pretty quickly.
Yea, the problem with this thread is we start talking about it and then we get 5 posts why XXX package is "so much better" (that does not for feature for feature even compare here) so it gets lost. Mods can we move all the Hacking/Moding WMC into Windows 10 to a NEW THREAD and yank the possible alternatives to this thread ? If this is EVER going to happen we need to be in a topic we can focus on the subject at hand. Thanks for anyone who can help here
Port WMC to Windows 10 Has anyone gotten any of the WMC services to start on Windows 10? After copying the ehome directory files (C:\Windows\ehome) from Windows 8.1, I was successfully able to reregister the services using these commands in a command prompt: regsvr32 atl.dll %windir%\ehome\ehSched /unregServer %windir%\ehome\ehSched /service %windir%\ehome\ehRecvr /unregServer %windir%\ehome\ehRecvr /service %windir%\ehome\ehRec.exe /unregServer %windir%\ehome\ehRec.exe /regserver %windir%\ehome\ehmsas.exe /unregServer %windir%\ehome\ehmsas.exe /regserver But when I try to start the services, I get the following error: "Windows could not start the Windows Media Center Scheduler service [or Receiver Service] on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." The WMC also will not start and does not produce an error message or an event in the event viewer. After doing some research, error 1053 usually means there are files missing for the service, which implies not all the WMC program files are in the ehome directory. Someone could try comparing the files for Windows 8.1 Pro vs Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center installations, using something like WinMerge (winmerge.org) to see what system files are added or changed with the addition of the WMC. This video: youtube.com/watch?v=KFRGxVriLDM may help create the system files. Stop after the "imagex"... command for the "with Media Center" installation and repeat the Dism /mount-wim"... command to remount the installation for comparison. Stop after the "Dism /mount-wim"... command for the without Media Center installation. Be sure to use different locations for the two mounts (such as C:\win81pro\mount and C:\win81prowmc\mount) and update the commands accordingly. WinMerge has a Tree Mode that would make it easier to find system files that are different. If we are able to find out what files are added or changed by the WMC, then we can easily copy them over from Windows 8.1. See: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Hh824822.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 for more information. I would do this comparison myself, but I am not sure what I would be looking for. I hope we are able to find a solution soon to port the WMC to Windows 10!

David while I agree with you mostly: about being in topic, and about the need to find a solution. Saying that the alternatives not even compare isn't fair. It's true WMC ON SOME ASPECTS is still better than other alternatives, but a program like Mediaportal is light years ahead on others. It depends on each user needs. In short of topic doesn't help but integralism doesn't help either.
I have gone through copying the files over, registering the files is a needed step but, does not resolve the problem. The services wont start till you are authorized to run Windows Media Center, I believe that is in the eshell.exe. This is enabled via the Key you used but, Windows 10 no longer has those files to not sure now. I got to the point as you but MUCH deeper, in build 10074 using WMC patch to run it and using a clean build of 10074, I copied files over one by one and exported most registry files I could find. I think I had it to the point where 99% of everything was there (including services). When I tried to run the ehome.exe, I would get a "This application is not authorized to run" and the services would do the same thing as is happening to you. Copying over is NOT going to be full fix here, getting the eshell patches to skip the kernel check is going to be the big starting point here, once that is done, we can try copying file by file over till we find the combo that works. After that point build a batch file (or a programmer makes a installer) and test some more. At least with 8.1 and Windows 10, you don't have to format and re-install, you just click a button to reset this computer and 20 min later your ready to try again... ~ Ok, your right on one aspect. I mean by WMC as a package is something that cant be compared to, for cablecard to Extenders for a whole home fairly easy to setup package. Nothing else is designed that integrated into one package like WMC. You are right on each package will fit people's need. Some use other packages as faces for PARTS of their HTPC, WMC for the main but, another app for Music and another for movies. Others prefer the whole package. Others use WMC in the background so they can use the other interface. Anyway about it, it goes to what I am trying to stop and get this back on topic on hacking WMC into 10... Sorry all...
Would be better if you post somewhere the work you have already done. Likely someone else with better knowledge on disassembling and patching packages can start from there and patch the needed files. Hardly a single user would do the whole work, alone.
I have in this thread but, it's got 21 pages now... someone who wants to try some things should read from the start... a lot has already been done or tried
On Windows 10 Build 10135 when the OS Edition is upgraded from Pro to ProWMC and then ProWMC to Enterprise, the DISM removes four packages from the WIM Image in order to upgrade ProWMC to Enterprise Edition. These four packages are the one which contains the WMC files required for Installing WMC on Windows 10 RTM but the problem is we need to patch this packages to install on Windows 10 RTM. I do have the Windows 10 Build 10135 ISO (x86+x64) and soon will start working on this WMC cab files and get back with more details.
That's not what I mean. There's a lot of discussion, but nothing easy to grab and install to try to move further. You have to consider that likely who is able to patch the needed files don't care at all of WMC or has a little knowledge about DISM or whatever, or doesn't have much time to read everything from the beginning and start from scratch. IT is a large matter, each technician, coder, sysadmin knows better a subsection of it, all the knowledge needed here on a single person, like happened with Rafael Rivera, is possible but is also unlikely.
I was able to extract the WMC into cabs with "Aunty Mel's Cheap And Nasty SxS Package Extractor" from 100074, 10130, 10135, W7 x65 and W8.1 x64. If this will help I can provide them to you. I've tried to install them via the DISM and get a version mismatch (of course) As I am over all new to this site and it's policies, I don't want to start jumping into things. It's a good idea but, where do do on this site is something I will need some advice from someone who has been here a long time. Welcome to suggestions but, maybe a new thread for it ? and no question its something that 1 person can not do, I have tried everything I can think of so far....
Hey, tell me, I have a laptop Samsung ATIV smart PC pro, it is one language for windows 8.1, Microsoft says seychchas Thu Oya can upgrade to the 10, he will deliver me the same windose? I just did not see where ONET Windows 10 for one language
Port WMC to Windows 10 I know copying the files is not going to be the solution, but it will be a big step if we can come up with the list of files that need to be copied. As it has been said, it is going to take multiple people, taking different approaches to solve this. Since the WMC did run in Windows 10.0.10074 and other insider preview versions of Windows 10, do we know for sure that there was a change made to Windows 10 RTM specifically preventing the WMC from running? Because if not, then it is just a matter of copying the necessary files and registry entries from Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 insider preview to Windows 10 RTM. We may even be able to add the WMC option back to the "Turn Windows features on or off" program (optionalfeatures.exe). You will notice that it still mentions Windows Media Center if you hover your mouse over "Media Features", even in Windows 10 RTM. I think we can eliminate the "Windows\WinSxS" files as they should be automatically created by Windows when needed. We should also be able to eliminate "Program Files\WindowsApps" as they have nothing to do with the WMC. Other than the "Windows\ehome" files of course, I am not sure what else will need to be copied. There are a lot of files that reference the Media Center in the "Windows\assembly" and the "Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly" directories.
