There are obviously people here that STILL do not get how Windows licensing works.

Its pretty simple for Windows (10 included):

    - Your license dies when your motherboard dies. Period.
    - Anyone with Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 will get the chance within one year to get a FREE (as in free beer not as in free speech) update to Windows 10. When you upgrade your Android/iOS, do you get the upgrade free and after one year, its illegal or you need to downgrade? NO. Same thing with Windows 10
    - As of this post, Windows 10 beta testers will NOT get a free Windows 10 license.
    - If you are using a illegal licensed of Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, you can upgrade to a illegal licensed of Windows 10. Your Windows will STILL be illegal and STILL not genuine.

Please debunk further lies or add any facts Ive missed.

I have seen that last line a dozen times but the question really is, if you you update an illegal copy to windows 10 not will it still be illegal but will it still be activated?

    Wrong.

I replaced my mobo a couple of months ago and was able to reactivate legitimately.

It obviously won't be activated, not if you use Daz loader, it may be geniue if you use a bios mod and maybe the free WMC key trick when W8 launched. So at least some pirates may actually get the it activated but i wouldn't bet on it. Everyone can upgrade, but not everyone is going to get activated.

It's about the upgrade not your current license.

You don't get a key so if you change your mainboard your hardware id changes and you have no activation when you install W10, simple as that. If you buy a W10 retail key that limitation is obviously not present.

There may be ways around it, maybe even asking MS nicely with your bulls**t story will do the trick we will see.

"Your license dies when your motherboard dies. Period." this applies to oem license, not retail. for retail version of windows (referring to w8.x licensing), you're eligible to use the key one device at a time. that means if the motherboard dies, you can get a replacement and still use the same key.

You do not get a new key if you upgrade to W10.

Your retail license is for W8, and only W8.
