Got this from a review at NewEgg Granted, it's for an 850, but I have an 830 with no samsung magician or firmware upgrades and it's been running flawlessy for about 3 years now.
Hello, The SSD you've choosen seems to be a good one, i bought myself Micron SSD and after testing it, i was pleased with the purchase. You obvisously will going to install win7 on it as it's the os that is installed on your current HDD if it's the case, could you please do me a favor and measure the time between the moment when you push on the power button and the moment when the desktop appears and you tell me the exact time that is displayed ? i did the test on my machine with new ssd and it took exactly 13 seconds in my case and i would like to compare this time with yours.
@ForrestGump: I have a Samsung 830 500gb drive, and it takes about the same amount of time as your system. The 860 pro should be just as good if not better. When I get everything running, I'll let you know what the startup time is.
Okay, thank you Since you already have one, could you please do the test on the current SSD and measure the time between the moment when you push on the power button and the moment when the desktop appears ? i'm really curious to know the time that it takes to startup on your machine with this current SSD.
samsung! my oldest one, SSD830 120GB is still a miracle in speed and durability ...or hp ssd m700 SATA (240GB) - 5 years warranty - battles samsung specs with lower price, very rare stockings i'm shocked how many make same xp with samsung 830 SSD ^^
Okay... The swap is complete. Cold boot up time is about 8 to 9 seconds. I have to say I'm extremely pleased. Restoring the drive was a lesson in patience. Naturally, Paragon 17 did not see the catalog from Paragon 14. So I had to hunt down a copy of Paragon 14. I did my backup to a USB drive, but I couldn't restore from it because the system couldn't see the drive during boot. So, I have a 1tb HDD that I swapped with my BlueRay burner. I proceeded to copy the backup catalog to the HDD. 4 hours later, the copy was complete. The restore went smoothly after that, and took about an hour. And here we are.
Personally I would prefer to do a clean install with a new drive, then just re-install the software and docs I want to keep
Good for you i have to say that 8 seconds boot up time is really impressive. Just to be clear, when you did your timing, did you immediately stop your clock when the desktop appears or did you wait until all the desktop icons and the network icon in the taskbar are loaded ? I've also bought a new SSD for my laptop, i created a topic related to this new purchase. In my case, when i did the timing between the moment when i push on power button and the moment when the desktop appears, here's what i got as result : 13 seconds => when the desktop just appears 20 seconds => when the desktop appears with loading desktop icons and network icon in the taskbar.
@forrest: I have a beast of a system here. Intel I7 3770K unlocked and 32 GB of PC2400 RAM. My CPU is rated at 3.5 GHZ, but mine idles at 3.9 GHZ without overclocking. So my boot times are really fast. My timing was done from a cold start. And the time I mentioned was when the system was completely functional. Of course I don't count WiFi time. 8 to 12 seconds, but this one seems to hover around 9 seconds. I did notice that, as the old drive filled up the boot time got a little longer. Probably that provisioning thing that John and Yen are talking about. @Joe C: Just installing Native Instruments Komplete 9 ultimate takes about 5 hours total. Then, the updates (There are about 100 of them) That takes about 4 hours. Then Cubase, followed by Arturia. By the time I'm done, it takes an entire day. The backup is the only way to go for me.
Yes i know that boot up time depends on the configuration of your pc but this will alllow to gain max 4,5 seconds So as expected, you didn't count the wifi time in your timing which hovers around 9 seconds so if you add this time to 8 seconds boot up , it becomes 17 sec overall. Could you please check and measure again the time between the moment when you push the power button and the moment when the desktop appears but this time you wait until wifi taskbar icon is completely loaded to see if the total of 17 secondes is reached. In my case, with i5 5200U, 8 GB of ram, the timing is exactly 20 seconds if you count wifi or ethernet time. That exactly what i did, restored my disk image on the SSD from a previous backup which was stored on my external HDD using win7 own image backup.
I've also got a DAW and have used Nuendo and Cubase, etc., for ages now. I've got several Samsung 860 Pros and you made a great purchase. The 840s and 860s are great. The 850 had issues and was the one you wanted to avoid. The days of having to use CMD prompts for trim, etc., are behind us. Any modern OS (after XP) will do all that stuff automatically. SSDs are essentially plug and play these days. Software: I'm all about keeping it simple. I recommend SSD Life for seeing specs on your SSD...and AOMEI Backupper for back ups. Your system will be solid and low maintenance.
