A few changes have been made to the Windows Vista SP2 64-bit install and update guide which was posted a few days ago. The dotNetFx4_ESU_Bypass_Vista tool has been added. Because of the massive number of Vista and Server 2008 updates involved in the process which may cause Windows Update to bog down or freeze, it is recommended that important updates be downloaded and installed first and then recommended and optional updates be downloaded and installed afterwards.
I recommend installing all normal "Update for Windows Vista" updates before the other ones, because they might fix any bugs with WU or anything related to it.
I've installed everything and the SHA2-WUC, but windows update fails to show updates from server 2008 in #22. I've done everything in order aside from installing .NET 4.6 and Visual C++ 13 and 22 before step #16. Is that the issue?
It sounds like you're doing a few things differently than how they're listed in the guide. And are you using the Vista_SHA2_WUC tool correctly? Select Install_WUC.cmd (That allows the Windows Update Client wuaueng.dll file to update itself) Reboot. Select Patch_WUC, then press the number 1. (That allows Vista SP2 64-bit updates to be selected) Reboot. Load Windows Update and do a scan, then install the displayed Vista 64-bit updates. Reboot. Select Patch_WUC, then press the number 2. (That allows Server 2008 64-bit updates to be selected) Reboot. Load Windows Update and do a scan, then install the displayed Server 2008 64-bit updates. Reboot.
I think they are using my method which was posted back in post #310, which would make sense that they are getting the error after selecting Server 2008 Updates as they installed the ESU LPP, as my post wasn't updated after the last Patch Tuesday. @Eduds6: You need to uninstall update: KB4575904. This is the bare minimum to get Windows Update working again after the March 2022 Patch Tuesday with the old method. But I would update root certificates too by using the pack in Captain's OP and I would also very much recommend installing the extras (.NET 4.6.2, DirectX Repack and VC++ Repack).
i've did all of this. No vista nor server updates appearing for me. I've also looked for the issue-plagued updated mentioned way earlier (yesterday actually) and i don't have it. This led me to consider if early installing .NET 3.5, 4.6 along with Visual C++ bundle from 2005 to 22 caused the issues, as none of my issues seem to be related with yours. No error is shown in windows update. just no server updates (vista updates are already installed)
Try to uninstall the VISTA SHA2 WUC tool, reboot, reinstall it, reboot then set it to Server 2008 again and check for updates.
Eduds6: The install and update procedure that ExtremeGrief uses in post #310 is very different than the install and update procedure that I use in post #1. You have not advised which install and update procedure you are using.
I've tried that. I'm using the main page guide from CaptainSpeleo. No server 2008 updates appearing. That was my fault, i'm sorry. I have followed your update procedure somewhere around february but i've made mistakes and corrupted my install somewhere along the '22 updates. I've started it all over again yesterday and did the same procedures from your guide (only KB5011942 as an distinction from what i did a month ago as i think the servicing stack update used before was older) but no server 2008 updates are being shown
I'm using a custom ISO. I may not have been exactly precise on the fact that i was not following the whole guide from start to end due to using a custom one, but the main reason for that was because things worked reasonably a month ago and only now it changed significantly. I think this likely is a sign that i should restart using a clean SP2 ISO and do everything as mentioned and shown in the main post, as it turns out that knowing the precise reason this is happening while the ISO itself may be the problem is not realistic or practical. I was simply not aware these kinds of problems could arise from doing that. So i'm sorry for taking your both time from it. I will try from a raw ISO in some days and report back on how things went here.
There is no need to apologize. We are all here to try to help each other. If you are using a custom or homebrew ISO, you definitely should switch to a clean untouched ISO. Which version (Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, etc.) of Windows Vista SP2 64-bit are you using?
baguettez: Thanks for making me aware of the February 2022 root certificate URL not working. I just confirmed that myself. ExtremeGrief: Do you have a new URL for it?
This should work for long time just not 24h/day as I am self hosting the files through ipfs. Edit: I couldn't get the the newest one through but the two older ones went through.
xrononautis: The top and middle root certificates in the list download okay. The bottom root certificate in the list keeps displaying a "504 Gateway - Time Out" message. I'm going to use the middle (October 2021) root certificate URL for now. Thanks!
