I agree - this method seems the safest and easiest as long as people are able to create bootable DOS USB Sticks. I personally used a WIN98SE Dos image + HP bootable USB creator (available for free somewhere on HP website).

I think, though, the tool itself is leaked/original from lenovo, thus it might be illegal to post. Unless someone gives me a green light i cannot provide it then.

Fortunately, I have a Chinese friend with a ThinkPad... And he gladly helped me wade through the forum posts and got me the tool. IT WORKS! I'm now running the 3.08 BIOS with SLIC 2.1... I'm soooo gonna update to Win7 very soon.

The marker.rar file also included a drive image for USB bootable drive to be used with UltraISO (also included, but in Chinese).

ultraiso is not really needed. I just used the "HP bootable USB stick" creation tool. It's floating around somewhere in the forums. But yes it works. I hope any new bios update will KEEP my 2.1 SLIC from now on. But that's the point, so i assume it will work :) This also greatly reduces the "make me a new bios" requests.

Do you refer to the special flash command of phlash16?
    Phlash16 SLP2_V3.wph /prot:$SLP:SLP2MARK.bin /S /X

    SLP2_V3.wph is the original bios.

The marker tool is indeed the safest. It will only flash a specific area in the BIOS chip. It will check whether the right type of file is provided, if not, you simply cannot flash. So the risk of bricking your computer is literally zero.

Since the SLIC table itself is already included in the BIOS, so if you flash a blank marker, you get no SLIC table, if you flash a 2.0 marker bin file, you get SLIC 2.0, of course, people will be interested in flashing a 2.1 marker bin file so they get a SLIC 2.1 table. Since the marker area is protected from regular BIOS update, the SLIC table (no SLIC, 2.0, or 2.1) stays there.

The key is to find the right marker bin file (the OEM ID must be the same in the marker as in the table itself). We now only have a limited set of these bin files (see post 3 of this thread). Models such as X61 are ruled out for getting SLIC 2.1 this way.

As long as you can get a bootable DOS USB key, you can use the marker tool. Do not use any memory management device in config.sys. Just go without a config.sys file.

I am not sure about the legality of the marker tool. It seems to be a leaked one. So probably not a good idea to post it here. It is floating around out there thou. But it is a bit weird that we are discussing a tool that can eliminate the need for BIOS mod on a BIOS mod forum...

No, a new one is out with the same name. The command is:

    phlash16.exe /w:SLP2MARK.bin /z

Default Lenovo T60/p - Biosmod CD - Final Report

For those who use the T60 or T60p like me, this laptop's bios has come a long way from its birth. So I would like to share some final thoughts.

I have 2 bios CD's. The previous Lenovo version 2.23(blue), and Yen's current biosmod 2.25(red).
[Note:Bios version of the CD's must be different or the CD will not upgrade or downgrade.]

1.Use the blue CD and change the WiFi card back to the original WiFi card to send the PC to Lenovo for a warranty issue. Or do a mandatory downgrade before upgrade.

    2. Use the red CD to add slic 2.1 (for Win7) and no whitelist (to change WiFi card to Intel link 5100/5150/5300/5350).

SLIC 2.1 and no whitelist is the best mod ! Now with Win7 and an Intel link 5300 WiFi card it is the best situation. However, an extra 3rd antenna (FRU 42R9909) is required for 802.11n using the 5300. Today we have 11n @300Mps routers and 450M routers are coming. The 5300 can do 450M so it is future ready. A little extra work to add the small antenna going to the inside bottom part of the LCD, we must do !

Why is all this work worth it ? 3 reasons:

    1.High Speed reality of 11n@300M is 200M vs. 54g @ 20-25M.
2.My WiFi technology. PC = Private Access point to share the internet connection.
3.WiMax (5150/5350) - Internet Mobility begins now and expands into the future.

Finally, at the end of this long jouney I especially want to thank Yen for giving his long hours to making all this possible.

    Sincerely,
    Maru_7711

The keygen.exe in the ultraiso dir contains Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.GEN
