It works either way, elevated cmd, or powershell. The whole reason for this post was to let some "less experienced users" that were using the backup and restore feature in earlier versions of windows know that it could still be done, without using third party software. Bottom line, just make sure you backup your system which will save your activation with whatever software or tool you like.
Try it again, I see you are using powershell, I have received the same "intermittent error" in 8.1 a couple of times before using powershell......Open Admin Command Prompt and try that.
If your getting the error at -quiet then do not add -quiet. (Hey Doctor, it hurts when I poke myself in the eye....(Doctor) Then stop poking yourself in the eye.) Also, If the drive you are backing up is not your default boot drive you may have issues. I had this problem when I was running a Hackintosh and using Chameleon boot loader and not having my windows drive as the default boot drive. Backup and restore would fail every time until I made the change in bios. Other than that, I don't know why your having issues.
Of course! And for about a month now, I'm using it as a semi-portable application from Win8PESE! It requires 3 driver files (500kb) to be "embedded" in your system (Using Winbuilder with a script), then TrueImage itself can be run from "anywhere" (portable), 40mb. Thanks to 2aCD for the great Winbuilder script!
You can assign drive letters using diskpart or using Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.
Well I use R-Drive Image, it's simple and easy and fast. I just copy the R-Drive Image Bootable Rescue Image to c:\ and i do add an entry to the windows 8 boot menu to use grub and when the system boot it will show a menu to either boot from Windows or R-Drive Rescue.
This was the message I got: Code: ERROR - Command syntax incorrect. Error: -quiet. So if the command syntax you posted within the start post should be generally wrong, you should modify it. That doesn't really suit our topic here. Drive C: is generally the system drive and that is what I have entered.
Yep, another vote for Acronis True Image here. I don't install it now though and just use the boot CD, create and restore drive images so easily.
You can still perform System image Backup in Windows 8.1 RTM. Just go to Control Panel > File History and find System image Backup option in the lower left corner. They managed to hide it well….

Thank you for having found it nevertheless. This may be the best option for me, because I have installed Win8.1 in UEFI mode and have a problem to boot any non-UEFI drive. By the way: The Win8.1 on-board system backup feature automaticly will include an additional backup of the EFI partition (without drive letter). Look here: EDIT: I have just done this way a complete backup of my Win8.1 (drive C: and the EFI partition). It worked flawlessly and was finished within less than 3 minutes.
