remove, and then put the device again the infamous disk format thing comes up. plus its a sub of NTFS, called as NTFPS
bump. so how to you get this to work with a clean install? about to install 7989 and want to know if a clean install will work with this new filesystem. how to get it to work?
as Microsoft thought: "let's give the people something to discuss about", maybe protogon is like winFS: just a hype. It could be a marketing joke and it's not the first time ms did marketing that way as we saw with winFS. There's a lot of rumor about this protogon stuff, but no facts.
It seems faster then NTFS and will most likely replace NTFS when Win8 goes Live but as of now I would not use that FS. The reason is because Any other OS including Win7 cannot read Protogon formatted objects. Basically if you format a USB Flash Drive or USB HDD with Protogon you will not be able to use that device with Win7 or any other OS, only Win8 will be able to read it.
There have been revisions of NTFS since its creation, protogon is probably just a new NTFS revision which resolves some of the issues with NTFS, such as performance. Apparently the NTFS on disk version (not OS functionality) hasn't changed since XP and is still at v3.1. Thats why Windows 7 disks are readable in XP . Protogon is either a minor, moderate, or significant change to NTFS. Using conventional versioning schemes, a minor change would make it say, v3.2. A moderate change v3.5 (for example) and a significant change v4.0. This is by no means a rule, its more of a guideline of how things usually go... In any case, its good Microsoft is looking into to improving NTFS, especially the speed! The other thing I wonder is if Windows 8 will support native mode 4k drives. Currently 4k drives have 4k physical and 512 byte logical sectors (512 emulation, which is why its referenced as 512E in Microsoft documentation as well as 'advanced format'). Apparently no OS supports native 4k drives, according to the Microsoft documentation, including Windows 7! and I believe that a true 4k drive could potentially be quicker regardless of whether its mechanical or SSD. Windows 8, native 4k drive, GPT partition, 'Protogon' file system, sounds lke a great combination on future computers (since UEFI is starting to become more common)
Anything new on this subject? (New filesystem for windows 8) Will there be a new filesystem for Windows 8?
Use this command with administrative privileges . DriveLetter: /FSrotogon /Q and hit enter. The Q option allows you to do the Quick format.
Wasn't protogon some kind of extension to NTFS? So probably all software that can read protogon can already read NTFS, but NTFS software can't read protogon without update.
M$ already wanted to create a new filesystem at Vista and they've failed. Now they are in a tight spot to release one finally. They need to have arguments that it's worth to update to w8 But again it will be nothing that is really needed and an updated NTFS only. Translated from the ru site: "Output На сегодняшний день файловая система Protogon обнаруживает признаки схожести с NTFS, однако не полностью повторяет её функциональность.To date, the file system Protogon shows signs of similarity with NTFS, but doesn't repeat its functionality" Not everything that is new is really better, especially when it's developed by M$.
